Description	:	Sarah Painter, eldest daughter of Susannah (née Stratton) and John Painter, junior, was born on 25 August 1762 near Winchester in Frederick County, Virginia. She married Jesse Holloway on 12 January 1780 at the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting in Frederick County. She married Jesse Holloway on 12 January 1780 at the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting in Frederick County. "Whereas Jesse Holloway Son of John and Margaret Holloway of Stafford County in the Colony of Virginia, and Sarah Painter Daughter of John and Susannah Painter of the County of Frederic[k] and Colony aforesaid having declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other […] "Now these are to Certify to all whom it may Concern that for the full Accomplishment of their s'd intentions this Twelfth Day of the first Month One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty, they, the said Jesse Holloway and Sarah Painter appeared in the Publick Meeting of the People aforesaid, Met together at their usual Meeting House at Crooked Run, and the s'd Jesse Holloway taking the said Sarah Painter by the hand did in a Solemn Manner openly Declare that he took her to be his Wife, Promising through Divine Assistance to be unto her a Loving and Faithful Husband until Death Should Separate them. And then and there, She the said Sarah Painter, did in the same like Manner declare that she took the s'd Jesse Holloway to be her Husband, Promising to be unto him a Loving and Faithful Wife until Death Should Separate them Or Words to that Effect." Sarah and Jesse Holloway are known to have had eight children.* The first seven were born in Virginia; the last in Ohio— • Hannah Holloway Rosell, 6 Jul 1782 • Susannah Holloway Stanley, 20 Aug 1784 • Joel Holloway, 29 Dec 1786 - 20 May 1872 • Aaron Holloway, 29 Mar 1789 - 13 April 1872 • Margaret Holloway Brantingham, 21 Apr 1791 - 29 May 1884 • Eunice Holloway, 9 Oct 1797 - after 1860 • David Holloway, 14 Nov 1800 - 2 Sep 1850 • Joshua Holloway, 24 Aug 1806 - after 1880 Sarah and Jesse Holloway settled in Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, by 1803, accompanying or following Sarah's brother Jacob Painter (and his family) who had settled in Perry Township, Columbiana County, in 1802. Sarah's widowed mother and youngest sister Susannah also settled there. Her ninth and last child, Joshua, was born in 1806 in Salem, a day before her 44th birthday. Sarah Holloway died on 2 February 1840, according to the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy.* She was age 77, and was survived by her husband, who died in 1846. The Crooked Run Monthly Meeting was near Nineveh, formerly in Frederick County, now in Warren County. "Sarah Painter Daughter of the aforesaid John & Susannah Painter was born the 25th day of the 8th Month 1762" (Record of Marriages, Hopewell Monthly Meeting Beginning 1758 (manuscript), p. 14 / p. 17 (written) [image 440/463].) The Hopewell Monthly Meeting is in Frederick Co., Virginia, near Winchester. * Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, vol. IV, p. 732 (Salem Monthly Meeting). The original source of Sarah Holloway's date of death is not known. Not found in the annual index of "The Friend," a Quaker periodical which from time to time had obits of prominent or noteworthy persons (including Jesse Holloway). Edwin Holloway's "paternal grandparents, Jesse and Sarah Holloway, came from Virginia to Columbiana county as early as the year 1803, settling on a farm near Salem, where their respective deaths occurred." (History of the Upper Ohio Valley, vol. 2 (Madison, Wisconsin: Brant & Fuller, 1891), p. 183.)
