Smith (better known here as Uncle Davy) died at his home northeast of Nelson at three o'clock Wednesday morning. Deceased was born in Victor, Ohio, June 9, 1844. He served in the Civil war with Co. H Indiana Infantry. In 1872 he came to Nebraska. He took up a homestead in Nuckolls county (sic) a mile north and a mile east of the present home. Later he bought the place now occupied by his son H.W. Smith where he has resided or (sic) many years. He has been one of the prominent men of his community, always taking great interest in things for the betterment of mankind. He was an active member of Nelson's "Sunset" family, and always enjoyed their annual gatherings very much. The funeral service will be held this (Thursday) afternoon from the Pleasant View church, conducted by Rev. Hewitt of Angus. Interment will be in the home cemetery. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, March 6, 1930 David Weiler Smith was born near Wooster, Ohio, June 9, 1844, and when seven years old moved with his parents to Allen county (sic), Indiana. Here he grew up with his two younger brothers and four sisters working on his father's farm. At the age of eighteen he enlisted in Company H, 89th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers and served his country until the close of the civil war. He returned home and in 1867 married Arabelle Stokes of York county (sic), Pennsylvania, and settled on a farm near that of his father. Because of free land for soldiers he sought the frontier of Nebraska and came to Nuckolls county (sic) in April, 1872, first settling on a homestead. After proving for this land he moved to the river farm which has been his home the remainder of his life. He and his wife knew all the hardships incident to pioneer life while rearing to manhood and womanhood a family of three sons and two daughters. Shortly after coming to Nebraska he was converted in a meeting held in the Shiloh school house and was a charter member of the Pleasant View United Brethren Church. At his death he was a trustee of this same church. He became an active Sunday school worker and organizer, and for a short time preached and was instrumental in founding a church near Guide Rock, Nebraska. Mrs. Smith preceded her husband in death, as did an infant son and daughter, twins; also his brothers and three sisters. The one surviving sister lives in Monoreville, Indiana. Others who survive are the children: John, Kiram, and James, Mrs. R.F. Harritt and Mrs. George Marlett; sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A large number of neighbors, friends and acquaintances have benefitted by knowing Grandpa Smith, and his life has touched all with whom he has associated for good. Job 5:26 The funeral services were held in Pleasant View United Brethren Church Thursday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. Hewitt of Angus. Interment was in the home burial ground on the farm.
