Description	:	Dean Gabriel Martinsen, 85 of Hawarden, Iowa, formerly of Newcastle, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newcastle, Nebraska. Burial will follow with military rites in the Newcastle Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Dean Gabriel Martinsen was born in Ponca, Nebraska, April 10, 1925, to Gabriel and Bertha (Wendte) Martinsen. He was raised in Newcastle, Nebraska and graduated from Newcastle High School. Dean served in the US Navy during WWII upon the ship the USS Great Sitkin. Dean married Emogene Beyeler on December 25, 1952, in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They lived and raised their family in Newcastle, Storm Lake, Iowa, and Estherville, Iowa before moving to Hawarden, Iowa in 1962. Over the years, Dean was employed by various packing plants until he settled in to his own business as the local butcher. He purchased Hawarden Meats and ran a successful business for over fifteen years. He and his wife also owned Soo Motel and ran that business together for many years. Dean enjoyed golfing with his friends, dancing, playing cards, and spending winters in Sun City, Arizona. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. He is survived by his son, William (Bill) and wife Jennifer Martinsen of Hawarden; brother, Max and wife Mary Lou Martinsen of Cherokee, Iowa; sister, Elsie Lund of Newcastle, Nebraska; son-in-law, Lee Thomas of Palm Desert, California; brother-in-law, Glenn Beyeler and wife Alice of Wynott, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Nina Martinsen of Newcastle, Nebraska, Lou Martinsen of Whiting, Iowa, and Edna Martinsen of Sioux City, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, and 9 great grandchildren. Dean was preceded in by his parents; wife, Emogene, daughter, Sabelle Thomas of Palm Desert, California; two stepsons, James and Gene Skipper; brothers, Elmer, Clarence, Glenn, and Lloyd; and sisters, Lois Harder and Donna Anderson.
