Gilbert of Loup City; and other relatives. The Sherman County Times - Apr 14 1949 ------------------------------------------------- Dean Gilbert Buried on Friday Afternoon Funeral services for Dean Gilbert were held Friday, April 15, at 2:30 p.m., at the Baptist church in Loup City. The Rev. S. E. Oakes conducted the service with the color guard and firing squad of the American Legion paying tribute to their fallen comrade of World War II. Dean Loyd Gilbert was born in Loup City Dec. 8, 1910, the son of Milo A. Gilbert and Katie Jane Gilbert. He grew to manhood on his parents' farm west of Loup City. After his graduation from Loup City high school he engaged in farmong with his brothers until Jan. 27, 1942, when he enlisted in the United States army. He served three years, nine months, and seven days, of which seven months and one day he saw overseas duty. He fought in the battles on New Guinea and the south Philippines. The report of the attending physician advises that his death is attributable to injuries received in the South Philippines. He received his honorable discharge Nov. 2, 1945. He purchased the Thompson shoe repair shop in Loup City. He remained here until August, 1947, when he moved his shop to Wood river, where he continued until his death. His father and his sister, Ruth, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother, Katie Jane Gilbert, two sisters, Orpha Marie Cross of Bellflower, Calif., and Pearl Esther Rogers of Cairo, and two brothers, Everett M. Gilbert, Hereford, Colo., and Clyde H. Gilbert of Loup City. He was a member of the First Baptist church of Loup City from his early manhood. The Sherman County Times - Apr 21 1949
