Services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. David Hemann officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Ida Grove, with military graveside honors conducted by the American Legion, Maple Valley Post 364. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Ida Grove, with military graveside honors conducted by the American Legion, Maple Valley Post 364. Born May 23, 1924, in Mapleton, Iowa, Delbert John "Blackie" Hupke was the son of John and Mary (Uhl) Hupke. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 as part of the peacekeeping force in Korea. On Nov. 26, 1949, Delbert was married to Beverly Schumacher at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. Delbert and Bev lived in Battle Creek all of their married life. Most of those years were spent owning and operating Del's 66 and Hupke's Service Station. Blackie also drove a school bus for the Battle Creek Community School District for 35 years, transporting three generations of families. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, the Battle Creek Fire Department Hose Company 1, Willow Vale Golf Club in Mapleton as well as the VFW and American Legion. For over 40 years, Blackie was an avid supporter of Battle Creek and later, Battle-Creek-Ida Grove, athletic events. In fact, he perceived himself to be their No. 1 fan. He enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye athletic events and also enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, golfing and kite flying. Blackie especially enjoyed the time he spent with family, friends and coffee buddies. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bev; two sons, Tim (Kris) Hupke of Danbury, Iowa, and Scott (Bobbi) Hupke of Mapleton; seven grandchildren, Katie Hupke of Des Moines, Jales (Carissa) Hupke of Omaha, Beau (Jessica) Hupke of Onawa, Iowa, Jas Hupke of Des Moines, Jesley (Chad) Hanke of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Amber (Tim) Wilcox of Ida Grove, and Dylan Hupke of Battle Creek; five great-grandchildren, Lane and Grayce Hanke, Daylyn and Hailey Wilcos and Brooklynn Hupke; two brothers, Dwayne (Dorothy) Hupke of Sioux City, and Leo (Kathy) Hupke of Cherokee, Iowa; five sisters, Macile Miller, Mary (John) Young and Junie Beacom, all of Sioux City, Marge (Jim) Young of Westfield, Iowa, and Monica (Bill) Johnston of St. Louis, Mo.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jon and Monty Hupke; and a sister, Theresa Hupke. Blackie was well known for his quirky sense of humor. His contagious laugh and quick wit were gifts he shared unknowingly with everyone he met. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
