Description	:	Delmar Herbert William Wessel was born October 13, 1920, the son of Henry F. and Freda C. Rademacher Wessel. He died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the home of his son in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-seven. Delmar was born in Charter Oak, Iowa, and attended country school in Charter Oak after which he worked on the family farm and for other local farmers. Read More	Delmar Herbert William Wessel was born October 13, 1920, the son of Henry F. and Freda C. Rademacher Wessel. He died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the home of his son in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-seven. Delmar was born in Charter Oak, Iowa, and attended country school in Charter Oak after which he worked on the family farm and for other local farmers. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and later confirmed as an adult at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City by Rev. E.E. Greene. On January 2, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. During World War II, he served mainly in Normandy, primarily as an airplane and engine mechanic. He also performed duties as a tail gunner. He was decorated with various medals for service to his country. After being discharged, he returned to farming. On January 5, 1947, Delmar was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Johannsen at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple was blessed with the birth of eight children. During the years that he farmed, Delmar also worked for Cornbelt Packing Plant and Schleswig Feeders Supply. He also owned his own trucking business with two of his sons. Delmar also worked for the Crawford County Secondary Roads Department, retiring in 1995. Delmar was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed a special relationship with each one of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was very important to him. Delmar enjoyed many hobbies throughout the years. He was particularly fond of bowling, fishing, deer hunting, coon hunting, the "Dodgers," and baseball in general. Additional hobbies included gardening and raising sheep. Delmar enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren showing lambs at the Crawford County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. He was a member of the Denison American Legion, the Schleswig VFW, an honorary FFA member, honorary 4-H member, and the Zion Lutheran Church. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters Florence Preul, Dorothy Wessel and Lois Petersen; one brother Lloyd Wessel; one son-in-law James Bruening; three granddaughters Mariah Gehlsen and Victoria and Veronica Wessel; four brothers-in-law Henry Preul, Oluf Olson, Edward Sonnichsen and Vahn Schumacher. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Gladys; eight children, Dale Wessel and his wife Rhonda Rae; Douglas Wessel and his wife Rhonda Kay; Fayleen Bruening; Colleen Wessel and special friend Bob Brown; Duane Wessel and his wife Kristi; Darwin Wessel; Darren Wessel and his wife Kelly; and Kathleen Gehlsen and her husband Brett; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include four sisters, Helen Olson; Esther Sonnichsen; Leva Schumacher and Lila Kline and her husband Don; two sisters-in-law: Lorraine Wessel; and Elfie Riessen; one brother-in-law Murlyn Aronson; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and graveside rites at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and "How Great Thou Art." Soloist Eldon Hardekopf sang "On the Wings of a Snow White Dove" and "On Eagle's Wings." Serving as honorary pallbearers were Jami Volkmann, Renae Schneider, Sarah Stock, Rebecca Eyer, Jillian McMinemee, Regina Kemp, Raquel Wessel, Caitlin Wessel, Johanna Wessel, Jasmine Wessel, Haley Gehlsen, Whitne Wessel and Emily Gehlsen. Serving as pallbearers were Justin Wessel, Troy Wessel, Travis Wessel, Aaron Bruening, Joshua Wessel, Jerad Wessel, Daniel Wessel and Dylan Gehlsen. Military honors were by Denison American Legion Post 8. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.
