Delphis Choquette was born on May 22, 1900, and died November 2, 1917, in a hospital at Camp Douglas, Arizona. As soon as war had been declared and Uncle Sam asked for volunteers he joined Battery B. 10th Field Artillery, Douglas, Arizona. The remains of Delphis Choquette arrived here Tuesday night on the Central Branch and were taken to the Ulysses L'Ecuyer home. Wednesday as early as eight o'clock people began to arrive in town from the country and by ten o'clock, the hour set for the funeral it became evident there would be a large crowd to do honor to the memory of the boy who had been away from father, sisters and friends, doing duty for you and me. At about 9:45 the long procession started from the L'Ecuyer home for the Catholic Church headed by the local membership of the Red Cross. Next in line was the W. R. C., honorary pall bearers composed of eight old veterans of the Civil War, the pall bearers, and then the hearse draped with a large flag, this followed by the mourners and then a multitude of friends. When the procession reached the Catholic Church the Red Cross, W. R. C. and Veterans alighted from the autos and marched to the church, right and left open file and inward and Headed by the Father Spoorenberg the procession marched into the church. The old comrades uncovered and four of the W. R. C. ladies held four large flags crossed over the opening. The public schools marched from their rooms to the church under the direction of Supt. Porterfield and the teachers and they too filed into the church passing under the flag the young man had been enlisted to defend. After the children had all been provided the large multitude were ushered in and standing room was at a premium. Ah, friends, this young man’s sacrifice is the first to come home to us and by your presence you showed you appreciated his offering. After the people had been seated, solemn requiem mass was sung by the pastor. Father Spoorenberg, assisted by Dr. Emery, of Aurora and Deacon and Father LeCoutre of St. Joseph, as subdeacon. After High Mass a sermon was delivered by the pastor and then the Libera was sung by the choir during the absolute over the corpse. Father Spoorenberg preached a grand sermon which did much to cement the friendship of all our people. This boy left his father, sisters and friends at the first call from our country, and left you and me here with our loved ones. “A man should love his country better than everything in the world, and this boy did, which was proved with the giving of his life, all he had.” War has come home to us, dear friends, and you and I feel it, but not as a father and two sisters in our midst do, therefore throw out the whole love our nature to them in their trying hour. After the sermon the casket was placed near the door where all could take a last look at the body in khaki, while the spirit had blown to the God which gave it. The large congregation then filed out of the church in order as they had entered; the Red Cross and W.R.C. opening ranks again. The school children marched to the cemetery where they opened ranks and stood at attention while the procession marched to the grave. Short services were held at the grave when the remains were deposited and left in hands of the sexton. To the cold, cold ground we consign your mortal remains, Delphis, but generation after generation will tell of your sacrifice and how you were the first from this country to fall in duty. As we believe our cause is a righteous one, we firmly believe God will see you have not died in vain. We publish the following letter written to Napoleon Choquette by the Captain of the Company to which Delphis belonged. It is a high tribute to the young man: Douglas, Ariz., Nov. 8, 1917. My Dear Mr. Choquette: I write to express my sincere sympathy with you in your sorrow over the death of your son. The battery was shocked and grieved to learn of his death and join with me in expressing my sorrow. Your son was a good soldier; liked by his comrades and officers and was always faithful in the performance of his duties. His loss is one which our battery will feel deeply. While no expression of sorrow or sympathy can lessen your grief, I hope that the esteem in which we held him will be a comfort to you. He was accidentally shot near the Mexican border. He did not suffer any pain and died a few hours after the accident with a smile and your name on his lips. We are planning the funeral with full military honors, which we think would have been his desire. Very Sincerely Yours, Alfred K. King.
