Dennis was first married to Joanna "Ellen" Graney on January 2, 1846 who was his next door neighbor for many years in Castle Island, County Kerry, Ireland. She died in 1851. (She was the mother of their 3 children; Murtah, Mary and Patrick.) Dennis married Julia Shanahan in 1852 in Indianapolis, Indiana and together they had 8 children. It is believed that Dennis died of an appendicitis attack. He was originally buried at Blue Springs Catholic Cemetery in Barneston, Nebraska. He was then moved to St. Josephs Cemetery in Barneston, Neb. in LOT 19 SP. 2. His tombstone states that he died at age 71 years & 10 months. OBITUARY; No date or name of newspaper given. Dennis Sullivan, who has resided south east of the city for the past eight years, died the latter part of the last week, aged seventy-eight. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church Sunday at eleven o'clock. The remains were taken to the Catholic Cemetery northwest of the city, where were laid to rest by the large concourse of friends.
