Obituary for John Sullivan in The Barneston Star, Dated Friday, July 19, 1901 DEATH BY SUNSTROKE; While working on the Jose Shalla farm 1 mile south of town on last Monday afternoon John Sullivan suffered a sunstroke which caused death in a very few minutes after he was stricken. He with several others had been working for Mr. Shalla stacking wheat. John was in the field pitching bundles to the wagons, one of the drivers noticed he was perspiring quite freely and asked him if it was warm. He replied it was pretty hot but did not complain of feeling bad but in a few minutes he was overcome by the heat and sank to the ground. He was carried to the shade and messengers dispatched to town for medical assistance but it was of no avail, he never survived enough to talk, only recognizing his sister, Mrs. Mahoney who got to him just before he died. John Sullivan was born in Indianapolis, Ind. May 19, 1855 and came to this state with his parents at an early day. John was of a roving disposition and would frequently be gone for a week or two at a time traveling from town to town. He was known all over the part of Nebraska and had friends in every community who will regret to hear of his demise in this manner. He took great interest in children and would always stop to talk to a child when ever he met one. In his companionship with men he was quick to form his likes and dislikes and was frequently more sinned against than sinning. The funeral which was held from the home Wednesday morning was largely attended by relatives and friends of the family, who followed the remains to their last resting place in the cemetery north of town.
