Born 3-18-1827 per St. Joseph Cemetery info. Burial information states that she was born in 1834. She was listed on the 1870 and 1880 census as being age 48. Born 1835 per the 1885 census. PASSENGER LIST INFO; I found a "Julia Shanhan" (age 22) on a boat with a Patrick Kirby (age 15) sailing on October 1, 1850 into District Of New York - Port of New York. Ship name was Western World leaving from Liverpool. It states that Julia is a washwoman from Ireland heading to Boston. (The 1900 census also confirms that she came to the USA in 1850) MARRIED; Julia married Dennis Sullivan on January 25, 1852 at St. John's Evangelist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dennis was recently a widower with 3 young children. One of his kids lived in Ireland with his parents but the other 2 kids were living with him. Julia married this man and treated these children like her own. She even lists them as her children on the 1900 census. INFO; Family stories have been shared that Julia made cookies for their neighbor, Jessie James and his family while living in Missouri. (I found Jessie at the age of 60 living in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1900 not far from where Julia lived so the story may be true. This boy ended up being an outcast in years to come.) Julia's step-daughter, Mary Sullivan Hensley shared with her family members that she remembers her mother having a boarding house and at times, Jessie James would eat there. Julia is listed in the 1886-1887 Nebraska, Beatrice area Farmers Directory in Liberty and Barneston Townships. In the Beatrice, Nebraska Directory, 1893-1894 she is listed living in Barneston, Nebraska. Great Niece, Elaine Svoboda is not aware of Julia and Dennis living on a farm. She also does not know of any will/probate for Julia. No probate on Dennis nor Julia per the Barneston area courts. 1900 census states that she was the mother of 10 children. Story shared by Kathryn Alders Svoboda where she is talking about her Grandmother, Elizabeth Sullivan Alders. Elizabeth loved her mother but thought that her father Dennis was very strict. Grandma told me her mother would light the lamp in the morning and put out the match, saving it to relight the stove and other lamps. One existing fire served to light every other fire. When she spent five cents on a box of matches they lasted a year. Her lamp wicks were homemade. She made a white wash to paint walls, leather patches to repair shoes, blackening to polish them. Grandma told how her mother would make the coffee. When helping wash dishes after a meal, Grandma or one of the girls dumped the grounds from the coffee pot and washed it. Then, each day reused what was there, adding only a tiny bit fresh. But on Sunday, they put fresh grounds in the pot and started the cycle again. She told me how her mother grew crops, made yeast, baked bread every other day. She grated horseradish and the girls would peddle it for 5 cents a jar. This meant walking miles for the girls. Of course, they ground their own flour. She said she could remember her mother either sewing, knitting or patching as she'd listen to the kids problems of the day making them feel important and at ease. Death Certificate states that her middle initial is "S". Middle initial is "E" on her burial info. Daily Express dated October 16, 1914; AGED RESIDENT OF BARNESTON PASSES AWAY. Mrs. Julia Sullivan, one of the early settlers of the Barneston vicinity, died Thursday morning, aged eighty-eight years. The deceased, with her family, located near Barneston over thirty years ago. Mrs. Sullivan is survived by three sons and three daughters. They are Patrick, David and Dennis Sullivan, and Mrs. Mike McGuire, Mrs. Wm. Alders and Mrs. John Mahoney. She also leaves a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday morning from the Barneston Catholic Church. Interment in the Catholic Cemetery OBITUARY; Weekly Wymorean dated Oct. 22 1914; Mrs. Julia Sullivan, sister of Mrs. John Mahoney, died Thursday morning at 3 o'clock, aged 87 year. All friends united in loving sympathy with the family. Funeral was held at 10 o'clock Saturday.
