She married Tarsney Harper Winfrey in 1905. They were the parents of two children: Melba Mae and Lawrence Harper. Mrs. T. H. Winfrey Passes Away Mrs. Winfrey passed away in her sleep early Sunday morning, September 6, 1947, in the home of her daughter Mrs. Paul Loney. Mr. Winfrey left Friday for a visit with the son Lawrence and his family in Minneapolis, and Mrs. Winfrey had planned to stay at the daughter's home during his absence. Mrs. Loney rose at the usual time Sunday morning, and when she was not joined by her mother later, went to her room and found her mother had passed away. Dr. Shook was called. Mrs. Winfrey had apparently been in her usual good health when she retired Saturday night. Mae Van Deveer was born near Youngstown, Illinois, May 29, 1886. When she was one year old her parents moved to this locality, the first two years living where Roy Davis lives. The family later moved closer to Stella, then into town. She was united in marriage to T. H. (Harper) Winfrey on Washington's birthday of 1905. To them were born two children, Melba, wife of Paul Loney of Stella, and Lawrence Winfrey of Minneapolis. Besides her husband and children Mrs. Winfrey is survived by her aged mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Van Deveer of Creighton, who was not able to come for the final rites; one brother, Dent Van Deveer, also of Creighton. There are four grandchildren: Jimmy and Mary Ann Winfrey, Allen and Maybeth (Mae Beth) Loney. Funeral services were held in the Community church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. C. F. Innis, assisted by Mrs. Innis. Rev. Innis spoke of her dependability, of her regular attendance at all church services and her loyalty to her family and friends. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse. Besides the flowers from the family, there were tributes from church, the clubs and many friends. Burial was in the Stella cemetery. Close friends of Mr. Winfrey acted as pallbearers: Velmer Freed, Emile Nombalais, Esburn Wheeler D. S. Hinds, J.S. Kimsey and C. G. Haskins. Mrs. Winfrey was a graduate of the Stella school, a member of the class of 1904. She had always been active in the affairs of the community, a member of the clubs, a faithful worker in the church and in her other activities. Mary Ann Winfrey, nine years old, submits the following tribute: "Grandma died last night. As we drive by the house and trees, the corn is good and well. The growing trees too. Now we are passing a big flower garden and here is an airport. The air planes are nice. I don't know how to thank God for letting Grandma die in her sleep." Among those at the funeral and burial services were Mr. and Mrs. Gus Berger, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Berger of Red Oak, Mr. and Mrs. John Berger, Mr. And Mrs. Ortel Phipps, Mr. and Mrs. Oren Phipps, Wayne Phipps, Mrs. Anna Long, Bert Phipps, all of Farragut, Mrs. C. B. Van Kirk of Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Swanson, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Hedges, of Waverly, Mr. and Mrs. Dent Van Deveer, their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Otradovsky, of Creighton. Card of Thanks Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for the kindness and sympathy that has been extended to us in our sudden sorrow - the death of our loved one, Mae Van Deveer Winfrey. We are deeply appreciative of the respect and esteem that has been shown to our loved one; and for the many courtesies extended to us.
