Doolittle, farmer and stock-raiser, section 10, Cass Township, was born at Hampton Corners, Vermont, December 10, 1831, a son of Ambrose and Esther (Hyde) Doolittle, also natives of Vermont. In 1842, his parents moved to the State of New York, where he grew to manhood, and in 1854, the family moved to Green County, Wisconsin, where the father died. The mother accompanied her son to Hamilton County, IA, and here spent the rest of her life. Our subject left Green County, Wisconsin, in 1866 and moved to Hamilton county, where he bought eighty acres of wild land. When he first came to Iowa he had a team of horses, two cows and $5 in cash. He went to work and after improving his land and paying for it he added to it from time to time until he now has 480 acres of Cass Township's best land, all well improved and his residence and farm buildings are comfortable and commodious. He is one of the prosperous and influential citizens of the township, and is among the foremost in assisting any enterprise of material benefit to the community. In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party. Mr. Doolittle was married in 1852 to Caroline Hayes, a native of Wyoming County, New York, daughter of Ezekiel and Dorothe Ann (Wiles) Hayes. They have six children--Helen, wife of A. Banks, of Eagle Grove; Martha A., wife of H. Allen; Charles, Frank, Addie Alma and Ada Alma (twins), the former the wife of Fred Pringle, and the latter the wife of Oscar Schoonover. The paternal grandparents of Mrs. Doolittle were John and Susan (Holladay) Hayes, the former a native of America, and the latter of Dublin, Ireland. They had a family of seven children--John, Ezekiel, Moses, Elias H., Polly, Betsy, wife of David Hall, and Susannah, wife of Frederick Hall. Her maternal grandparents were Frank and Penelope Wiles, the former a native of England and the later of Germany. They had nine children--Daniel, David, Abram, Betsy, wife of Daniel Osterhout; Dorothy, wife of E. H. Hayes; Effa, wife of William Ellison; Katie, wife of Malanton Smith; Nancy, wife of Daniel Odell, and Sally. A Biographical record of Hamilton County, Iowa - NY: S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1902, 645 pgs. - D.S. Doolittle engaged in farming and on leaving the east took up his abode in Michigan, while later he removed to Wisconsin, and in 1865 came to Hamilton county, Iowa. He purchased two hundred forty acres of land in Cass township, and resided there continuously except for one year which he spent in Colorado for his health, until called to the home beyond on the 9th of January, 1889. His widow is still residing upon the old family homestead and is one of the esteemed ladies of the neighborhood. . . . (Mrs Doolittle) By her marriage she became the mother of six children, two sons and four daughters: Helen, the wife of Albert Banks of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Martha N., the wife of H.S. Allen of Cass township, Hamilton county; Charles D. of this review; Frank, who married Hattie Frakes and resides in Cass township; Ada Eleanor, the wife of Oscar Schoonever, of Kallispelle, Wyoming; and Addie May, who is the twin sister of Ada, and is the wife of Ferdinand M. Pringle, their home being in Webster City. Dewey was born in Vermont, his parents being Ambrose and Esther (Hyde) Doolittle. His natal day was in 1830 and became a farmer of the Empire state. He had one brother, Kendrick, who is now living in Cass township, Hamilton county, while another brother, Socrates, makes his home in Fremont township, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Glover is a widow and resides in Omaha, while another sister, Mrs. Mary Spangler is living in Wisconsin. Mr. Doolittle died on the 9th of January, 1891, He had suffered for some time from asthma, and for this reason, spent considerable time in Colorado, hoping his health might be benefited. His death, however, resulted directly from a cancer caused by a wound made by his saddle horn.
