Description	:	Socrates was born at Hampton, Washington county, N.Y., to Ambrose and Esther Hyde Doolittle on December 10, 1825. He was one of nine children. They were; Adaline (1843 -1883), Naoma (1816-1877), Marquis (1818-1821), Thankful (1820-1843), Adin Kendrick (1823-1908), Dewey (1829-1891), Mary Francis (1831-d.1896? or 1905?), and Esther (1834- ?). In 1842 the family relocated to Eagle, in Wyoming county, N.Y. In 1845, his brother Adin married and relocated to Janesville WI. and then Monroe, in Green county, WI. It is likely that Socrates, at age 17 accompanied them. He was married there on June 12th.,... Read More	Socrates was born at Hampton, Washington county, N.Y., to Ambrose and Esther Hyde Doolittle on December 10, 1825. He was one of nine children. They were; Adaline (1843 -1883), Naoma (1816-1877), Marquis (1818-1821), Thankful (1820-1843), Adin Kendrick (1823-1908), Dewey (1829-1891), Mary Francis (1831-d.1896? or 1905?), and Esther (1834- ?). In 1842 the family relocated to Eagle, in Wyoming county, N.Y. In 1845, his brother Adin married and relocated to Janesville WI. and then Monroe, in Green county, WI. It is likely that Socrates, at age 17 accompanied them. He was married there on June 12th., 1847, to Olivia C. Kellogg. By 1860 the parents and another younger brother, Dewey had also followed them to WI.. By then, all the families had settled around the town of Albany in Green county. In 1865 Socrates relocated to Webster City where he may have been a blacksmith for a time before starting to farm in northern Cass or Fremont township. By the 1870 census, Socrates appeared to have lost his first wife, as only his four children were listed with him in the household. In 1874, (as shown in the 1900 census), he married Jennie R. Alexander. He passed away the morning of Dec. 31, 1907, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. WW Sinclair, living 6 miles north of Webster City. His obituary listed the following surviving children, Mrs. WW Sinclair, Mrs. J.S. Thompson, Mrs L.M. Harris, A.C. Doolittle, Harry Doolittle, and Earnest Doolittle, all residing in or near Webster City; E. Doolittle of Davis City, IA., Mrs Ollie Miller of Oklahoma City, OK., and Mrs. John Frakes of Woolstock, IA.
