We had free food as soon as we got off the boat, and have had plenty ever since. This country is very pretty. The trees are so green and flowers are blooming. It isn't very cold. The only thing I don't like is it rains so much – almost every day. The huts we live in are nice and warm, with electricity and heated by oil burners. DeMoss - Donald Francis DeMoss, son of Clarence Elmer and Ida Mabel Shelley DeMoss, was born January 9, 1920 in Jasper County, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Jasper County area, he attended rural Monroe Schools. Francis lived in the Killduff and Sully areas prior to moving to Newton in 1953. He served his country during World War II, with the US Army, as a Medic. On June 22, 1947, Francis was united in marriage with Lola Mae Lanphier in Killduff. He was a past member of the Mt. Zion Church in rural Newton and a member of the Reasnor United Methodist Church. Francis was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton, the Midwest Manufacturing Company in Kellogg, and operated a Lawn Mower Repair Service for Coast to Coast, before retiring in the mid 70's. Death came to Francis at the age of 82, on Friday morning, December 13, 2002 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. His parents, his wife Lola Mae on Nov. 18, 1994, and his two brothers, Carl and Roy preceded him in death. Those left to honor the memory of Francis include his two sisters & brother-in-law: Betty & Bob DeBruyn of Newton and Helen & Clois Reppond of Alex, Oklahoma; several nieces & nephews; and his many friends. A Celebration of Life, Funeral Service Held at Pence Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa, 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 16, 2002. Conducted by Rev. Duane Skidmore, Pastor Reasnor United Methodist Church, Reasnor, Iowa. Music - Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art and There is Something About That Name. Active pallbearers - Dan Carter, Jason Schrader, Leslie Munger, Denny Bell, Gerald Bell, Wayne Bell. Interment - Mt. Zion Cemetery rural Newton, Iowa."
