Surviving are his wife, Helen; a son, Don B., in the U.S. Air Force at Stead AFB, Nev.; a daughter, Mrs. Lee Fletcher of Earlham, Ia.; and two sisters, Blance Goodrich of Linwood, Calif., and Mrs. Helen Hutchinson of Long Beach, Calif. Funeral services are to be held in the Nelson Methodist church (sic) at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, with interment in the cemetery here. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, May 8, 1958 ========================= Donald Hawley Goodrich, son of Henry E. and Leola M. Goodrich, was born in Nelson, Nebr., on Jan. 22, 1897, and departed this life on May 6, 1958. Don attended grade and high school in Nelson. He graduated from high school in 1916 and taught a rural school that fall. He entered Nebraska University, College of Agriculture, in the fall of 1917. He entered the service of his country late in the spring of 1918 and served in the Army until the end of World War I. Following his discharge, Don taught at Bostwick until he purchased the Goodrich Grocery Store at Nelson from his father. Here he served the community until ill health forced him to give up his work for a time. He and his father together were in the grocery business for 57 years. When Selective Service was established, Don was appointed to the county board and soon after became the clerk of the local board. He held this position, except for two years when he was in business at Edgar, continuously until his death. Don was a member of the Methodist church (sic) at Nelson. He was a member of the American Legion of which he was service officer for many years. He was ever faithful to his duty and served quietly and faithfully where his services were needed. On Aug. 12, 1920, Don married to Helen Beach of Akron, Colo., and they established their home in Nelson. Two children, Lee and Don B., came to bless this home. He is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Mrs. Von Fletcher of Earlham, Ia.; his son, S/Sgt. Don B. Goodrich of Reno, Nev.; four grandsons, one granddaughter, and two sisters, Mrs. P.E. Hutchinson of Long Beach, Calif. and Blanche Goodrich of Lynwood, Calif. Funeral services were held in the Nelson Methodist church (sic) Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Lincoln B. Justice officiating. Interment was made in the Nelson cemetery (sic). He Is Just Away I cannot say, and I will not say, That he is dead - He is just away!
