He was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Lawrence, the son of George and Bertha Klock Wetzel. He served in the Army Air Force from July 1942 until June 1946 in the United States and Pacific theaters, retiring with the rank of major. He was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Lawrence, the son of George and Bertha Klock Wetzel. He served in the Army Air Force from July 1942 until June 1946 in the United States and Pacific theaters, retiring with the rank of major. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1950 to 1977, retiring from the position of assistant postmaster. He served as state president of the National Association of Postal Supervisors. He later worked in golf operations at the Alvamar Country Club. He was the secretary treasurer of the Lawrence Bowling Assn. for 13 years. He was also a longtime director and past president of the Kansas State Bowling Assn. and the Southwest Bowling Assn. He was elected to the Kansas State Bowling Hall of Fame. He was also past president of the Heart of America Golf Assn. and a director of the Kansas Senior Invitational Golf Assn. He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church, the American Legion and the BPOE Lodge No. 595. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Williams Fund at Kansas University.
