Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield, Iowa. Doris Eileen Ward was born July 27, 1919, at Thornton, to Earl and Ruth (Watson) Enabnit. Doris received her education and graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, then taught in rural schools in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. On Dec. 29, 1939, Doris was united in marriage to J.C. Ward in Des Moines. Following World War II, Doris and J.C. owned an operated Ward Locker in Swaledale until 1961. She then worked as secretary of the Rockwell-Swaledale Middle School and later became superintendent secretary until 1975. She lost her beloved J.C. in 1974. In 1975, Doris moved to Garner where she managed Prairie View Retirement Apartments for two years. In 1977 she became business manager and board secretary of Ventura Schools until she retired in 1986. Doris moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where she lived until her health failed. She became a resident of the Assisted Living Apartments in Greene in May 1999 and moved to the Liebe Care Center in May 2000. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church in Swaledale and also enjoyed attending Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake. Faith was an important part of her life and she was active in her churches where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, volunteered with the Red Cross and the church library. Doris was a member of the P.E.O., enjoyed long walks, bus trips, knitting, needlework, Christmas baking, shopping, visiting with her friends and driving around Clear Lake in her yellow convertible. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was an avid Hawkeye basketball fan and watched every game on television. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Carl of Sioux City; son, Rodney Ward of Hanlontown, Iowa; and sons, Steve Ward and his wife, Sherri of Greene. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Ned Carl, Bradley Carl, Brian Carl, Stephanie Ward, Jennifer Ebling, J. Christopher Ward, Meagan Ebling and Danielle Ebling; five great-grandchildren, Christy Carl, Malyssa Schnider, Miranda Kobes, Trey Kobes and Ty Kobes; a brother, Orlyn Enabnit and his wife, Bethel of Swaledale; and a sister, Lucille Ward of Mason City, Iowa. Doris was also preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Donovan; and grandson Douglas.
