Description	:	Dorothea Isabelle Kopriva was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Pocahontas, the daughter of John and Mary Poduska Kopriva. She was raised on the Kopriva family farm in Sherman Township and led an active academic and extracurricular career. She excelled in local and statewide spelling bees and played with the Pocahontas High School Marching Band. She graduated as valedictorian of the Pocahontas class of 1938 at age 16. She then attended Cornell College, Mount Vernon, for two years but lack of funds required her to discontinue college. She was raised on the Kopriva family farm in Sherman Township and led an active academic and extracurricular career. She excelled in local and statewide spelling bees and played with the Pocahontas High School Marching Band. She graduated as valedictorian of the Pocahontas class of 1938 at age 16. In 1940, Isabelle moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the War Department. She served in a typing pool responsible for sending letters to servicemen's families. She later moved to Omaha where she worked in another secretarial position, before returning to Pocahontas to help care for her father and to work for the REC. Back in Pocahontas, she reunited with a former grade school county spelling bee rival by way of Fonda, Dr. Justin C. Tolan. They were married at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Pocahontas on April 20,1949, and were honored as parade marshals for Pocahontas Heritage Days in 1986. He died on June 20,2007 Isabelle faithfully served her hometown in many ways — as organist for the Catholic churches for more than 40 years, Girl Scout leader and member of the library board, Writers Club and Phoenix Club. She also chauffeured paperboys, helped older neighbors obtain groceries and always had cookies and Kool-Aid for the neighborhood kids. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, her parents, and two sisters, Marcella Simpson and Amelia Drobney.
