Description	:	Dorothy M. Hewlett, 90, of Pierre, passed away at her home with her family on December 5, 2012. A Memorial Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm, on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Feigum Funeral Home, concluding with a prayer service at 7:00pm. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be at 10:00am, on Monday, December 10, 2012 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Hewlett, 90, of Pierre, passed away at her home with her family on December 5, 2012. Dorothy Mae (Melvin) Hewlett was born to Dan and Bertha (Sanders) Melvin on June 2, 1922 at Ree Heights, SD. In 1928 the family moved to Pierre, then to a farm near Rousseau, where Dorothy attended grade school for eight years. She went to high school for three years in Pierre, but graduated from Canning. Dorothy then attended Wessington Springs College where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught in various area rural schools. On March 17, 1944 she married Lawrence Hewlett at Canning they lived in California for a short time, while Lawrence was in the Army. Upon his discharge the moved back to Pierre where Dorothy worked for Pierre National Bank then Bankwest for the next 35 years. Although they had no children of their own they were parents and grandparents to many nieces and nephews over the years; especially their niece Diana and her children and grandchildren. Lawrence passed away October 9, 1997. Dorothy then spent her time helping others and volunteering for various organizations including St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, Hospice Thrift Store and Reading Buddies. She was a member of the Pierre Congregational Church of Christ, American Legion Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary and SD Retired Teachers. She is survived by her niece Diana (Gordon) Hettinger of Pierre, and her children Melissa (Don) Churchill of Chadron, NE, Jayson Sherer of Pierre, Justin (Libby) Sherer of Ft. Pierre and Ross (Tara) Hettinger of Aberdeen; 3 sisters, Effie Hunsley of Pierre, Joyce Norman of Kennewick, WA, Donna Betsinger, Canning, also lovingly treasured by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews and great-great nieces & nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Lawrence; parents, Dan and Bertha; sisters, Zora Thompson, Madaline Fratzke, Jessie Whitney, Mary Gabert; brothers, Wilbur and Warren along with an infant brother and sister, Daniel and Margaret.
