She graduated from Aurora High School in 1935 and briefly attended Hastings College. Dorothy was working as a secretary for the Soil Conservation Service when she met Ivan Stauffer. They were married August 31, 1941. While Ivan was serving overseas during World War II, she worked for the Office of Price Administration.
