Note: parent relationship links and DOD location information updated on this memorial March 29, 2016 per edit requests. ----------------------- The following information provided by "Peggy" on Sept. 30, 2018 for use on this memorial: "Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hickenbottom of near Granger, drowned in a pond at the farm home, located six miles north of Granger, Sunday morning, about 9:30. The two children, Richard, age 9, and Douglas, age 6, had gone to the pasture located north and east of the home, to care for the horses and when they did not return to the house a search was made and it was discovered they had fallen into the pond in the pasture. The father recovered one body that was floating on the surface of the pond and Carl Adamson, son-in-law, and a brother of Mr. Hickenbottom, recovered the other. Authorities said that apparently the boys had tested the ice along the edge of the pond and had fount it solid and had walked out further. The ice at the point tested was solid, having been shaded by a water oak near the pond. As the boys ventured across the pond, they broke through and apparently went down together in should deep water. Sheriff Charles Milligan and Coroner Delbert Shaffer were called from Clark County, but as the farm is located just over the line in Scotland County Sheriff Priest and Deputy Earl Crawford were called. Also at the scene were State Troopers Joe Wood and Ted Bair. The bodies were first taken to the Gutting Funeral Home in Kahoka, Missouri and later transferred to the Behmer Funeral Home in Fairfield where funeral services are pending."
