Markwith, one of the oldest practicing physicians of Greenville, died at his late residence, 304 Martin St., at 10:30 a.m., July 18, 1925, after a lingering illness of bronchial asthma. He was the son of James J. and Barbara Markwith, and was born on the home farm of his parents in Van Buren Twp., Sept. 23, 1858. His boyhood days were spent on the farm and in early manhood he became prominent in educational work in the county. He attended the Greenville High School and afterwards graduated from Lebanon College. Returning from Lebanon he taught country school and was superintendent of Gettysburg school and principal of the Versailles schools. He entered Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati and graduated in 1886. After taking a post-graduate course in surgery at Bellevue Hospital, New York City, he continued to practice his profession in this city until March of this year. He was always interested in the civic welfare, having served on the Board of Education for 9 years, and was the first health officer of this city, having served five years in that capacity. He was united in marriage to Margaret Mann in 1893. Two children were born from this union, Dr. R. H. Markwith, located at Akron, Ohio, and Miss Margaret Markwith, a teacher in the local schools. The passing of Dr. Markwith after a useful life and his ever willing spirit to assist his fellowmen both professionally and materially, has endeared him to his great number of friends, leaving the thought uppermost in our minds, that he lived to bless mankind.
