Jefferson, Darke Co., Ohio to J.J. and Sarah Markwith, Aug. 29, 1839, and was the oldest of 8 sons and 3 daughters. Mr. Markwith came from Revolutionary stock, being a great grandson of Capt. William Ashley was a native of Poultney, Vermont. Mr. Markwith was married to Miss Hannah Devilbiss at Arcanum, Ohio, Sept. 29, 1861. To this union were born 8 children, all of whom survive with the stricken mother to mourn the loss of a father; they are Laura Markwith Baumgardner of Leipsic, Ohio, family of two sons and one daughter, the oldest son, Gill, a minister at McComb, Ohio; Olive Markwith Sma.., Defiance, husband and 2 children; Sadie Markwith Schubert, Columbus, husband and 2 children, Russell B. Markwith of Greenville, wife and 3 children, Daisy6 Markwith Shanley, husband and son of Wichita, Kan., who could not attend the funeral; Guy Markwith, of McAllister, Okla., wife and son; Kittie Markwith Davis of Mendon, Ohio and husband. His early manhood was spent in teaching school in which he continued for about 100 months, beginning in the spring of 1855. He taught select schools to which many teachers came for training. War Record. He served in the Civil War, enlisting at Greenville, Ohio, Aug. 11th, 1862 in the 94th O.V.I. and went immediately to the front. Was in the following engagements: Fates Ford, Perryville, Ky., Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge. Was in the "Atlanta Campaign" from May 1st to Sept. 2nd 1864, during which he was in the engagements, Buzzard's Roost, Resacca, and in this engagement Markwith's Regiment lost about every 4th man. Was in the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, and Siege of Atlanta lasting 37 days. Was with Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in his march to the sea. Was with the troops that took Savannah Dec. 21st 1864. The last battle fought was at Bentonvilel on Mar. 19, 1865. Was in the review with Sherman's Army on May 24th at Washington. Was mustered out June 14, 1865, but not really discharged until the Regiment reached Camp Chase at Columbus, Ohio, June 14th. He held offices of Sergeant Major and was afterward commissioned 1st Lieutenant. Was in every battle and skirmish which occurred when he was on detail to guard commisary stores. Church Record. Was converted Jan. 14, 1869, at Versailles, Ohio, under the pastorate of Rev. Charles Farnsworth, a Methodist Minister and joined the church there a few days later. Was baptized with 3 of his children Feb. 1st, followed by Rev. Joseph Wykes. Was liscensed as an exhorter about one year after conversion and began preaching April 6th 1871, joining the Central Ohio M. E. Conference and has been a member ever since. During his ministry he was assigned as follows: Brock, Ansonia, Dawn, North Star, Shooks Chapel, Ewings Chapel, White House Circuit in Henry and Lucas counties; Arcanum Circuit, 4 churches; Delke Circuit, 4 churches in Delaware and Marion counties; Zanesville Circuit, 4 churches; Port Jefferson, Shelby Co., 3 appointsments; Versailles Circuit, 4 appointments; here he built a new brick church on the spot where his conversion occurred 14 years previous; Shanes Crossing, now Rockford, Ohio, 4 appointments; Mt. Liberty, LaRue, Mrion Co., 3 appointments; Ansonia Circuit, 3 appointments; Anna Station Circuit, 3 appointments; Mendon Circuit, 3 appointments; Rockford, Dunkirk Circuit, Harden Co., 3 appointments; Bradford, and in 1904 was appointed Conference Evangelist; Cincinnati Conference Gordon Circuit, 4 appointments; Hoytsville, 4 appointments; then back to Versailles, 4 appointments, where he finished his work. Was ordained Deacon by Bishop Ames at Van Wert, Ohio, Sept. 21st, 1873. Was ordained Elder by Bishop Wm. L. Harris at Delaware, Ohio, Sept. 26th 1875. Held office of Asst. Treasurer of the Central Ohio Conference for 16 years. During his ministry he took into the church not far from 3200 persons, and many more were converted by his earnest labors. From a paper read by Rev. John Parlette, a long time friend of the deceased: "Morrison M. Markwith was converted at the age of 29 in the old church in Versailles, near the spot where we now stand to pay the last sad rites to his memory. To him is due the credit, I understand, of removing the old church when it would no longer serve its purpose, and replacing the present structure in which we are now assembled. "He entered the Central Ohio Conference on trial in the fall of 1871 in Kenton and I think he has answered at every roll call annually ever since, coming up from the several fields where he wrought faithfully until summoned to the Lord of the harvest to give account of his labors. "Thirty-nine years ago next Sept. I first saw the face of our deceased brother; was introduced to him with three others who came before us as a committee of examination for admission into the traveling connection in the Central Ohio Conference at Kenton. The acquaintance formed then continued to deepen and widen as we were thrown together at each succeeding conference session. After a three years' pastorate at LaRue he followed me as my successor. After a successful pastorate at West Liberty I followed the deceased. For about 20 years he has assissted me in my treasurer's work, so there has been an intimacy between us that gave me a fair opportunity to know of the type and spirit of the man, from what I could see and hear. He was of a decided and postive turn of mind; a man of pronounced convictions and as stoutly mained them; yet genial and agreeable, which made him very companionable. He was a man of great earnestness and enthusiasm in what he undertook; a good preacher and pastor. I do not know of him serving a charge in his former years where he did not have a revival. There will be many souls to the credit of his ministry in the great day of reckoning. He fell in the midst of the battle with his face toward the enemy, reproving men of sin, preaching righteousness and the judgment, full of years and honors. Truly a great and good man has fallen. We are distressed for him. 'Very pleasant hast thou been. Thy love to us has been wonderful, surpassing the love of woman.' "His wife is robbed of a kind husband upon who she has leaned these many years; these children of a kind father to whom they looked for comfort and support; this church of a pastor and shepherd who had the welfare of his flock at heart; conference of one of its honored members who has wrought on many a hard field, and fought many a hard battle. But the riches taken from the militant church will add to the fair colors of the Church Triumphant. --Parlette Rev. Markwith had two desires regarding his death--that he might die in the work, and that he might die suddenly. His prayers were answered, as he closed revival services at Horation only two weeks before his death, and had intended to begin similar services in Versailles on the evening before his demise, but was not able. He passed to his reward Feb. 28, 1910, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 29 days. Funeral services were held at the church, Thursday, March 3, conducted by the District Superintendent C. R. Havighurst of Bellefontaine, Rev. E. L. Davis of DeGraff, and Rev. E. S. Keller of Wapakoneta read the scripture lessons, and Revs. John Parlette of Van Wert, Stewart Baumgardner of N. Baltimore, and C. R. Havighurst spoke words of the highest ecomium of the deceased, and great comfort to the mourners and the sympathizing audience. Besides the ministers who participated in the obsequies there present the Revs. J. Bennett of Ansonia, S. L. Walker of Sidney, A. J. Bussard of Quincy, R. W. Turner of Rossburg, J. A. Lucy of Ayersville. The many beautiful floral offerings were bright witnesses and loving tributes of respect to his worth and memory. Burial, Friday, at Abbottsville by undertaker Leonard Marker.
