(C) 1920-2001 by Dr. Joe Berg : Following prolonged illness courageously faced, Dr. Don Zarfas died in the early months of his eighty-second year, deeply mourned by his beloved wife (Jean) of over half a century and their family, as well as by countless others from all walks of life. He was a warm and considerate gentleman, in the best sense of that noun, who fulfilled multiple roles with characteristic grace, good humour and effectiveness. In professional spheres, psychiatrist, public servant, administrator, university professor, clinician, investigator and author are among designations that spring readily to mind in which he undertook valuable, and indeed often pioneering, pursuits. Nowhere, I think, are these pursuits more inclusively represented than in Don's long and affectionate direct association with the Children's Psychiatric Research Institute, in London, Ontario, initially as its innovative founding superintendent in the early 1960s, and about a decade later, till his retirement in the late 1980s, particularly in the context of his University of Western Ontario professional responsibilities. It is fortunate for those with intellectual and related disabilities that Don's career was largely devoted (mainly in Ontario, but with ramification well beyond its boundaries) to the welfare and advancement of such persons. His relationship with them commenced in childhood when they became well-known to him at the then Ontario Hospital School (later renamed Huronia Regional Centre) in Orillia. Don's abiding appreciation of their humanity, qualities and needs resulted in sterling and devoted service to them in the various capacities mentioned – undertakings that, if specifically outlined in sufficient detail to do them justice, would fill numerous pages, an impractical luxury in the limited space available. However, closely connected as I have been for many years with Surrey Place Centre, I am glad of the opportunity to record here that Don played a crucial role in the development and formation of the Centre in the mid-1960s, in his capacity as Consultant in Mental Retardation to the Ontario Ministry of Health and subsequently as the Director of the Mental Retardation Services Branch of that Ministry. It is a pleasure for me to note the Centre's appreciating of that role, among others, through according him the dual honour of naming its auditorium the Zarfas Room, and of bestowing on him, as the first recipient, its Clay Moore Award of Merit. These typify, as does for instance his Merit Award from the Ontario Chapter of the American Association on Mental Deficiency, the respect and esteem in which Don was widely and deservedly held both for his personal and his professional attributes.
