Description	:	Dr. Fredrick William Kottmeyer, 75, of Broken Bow, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in Lincoln. Fredrick was born Dec. 18, 1935, in rural Bostwick to Fredrick and Lydia (Mueller) Kottmeyer. Read More	Dr. Fredrick William Kottmeyer, 75, of Broken Bow, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in Lincoln. Fredrick was born Dec. 18, 1935, in rural Bostwick to Fredrick and Lydia (Mueller) Kottmeyer. On June 16, 1963, he married JoAnn Meyer near Minden. Survivors are: wife, JoAnn Kottmeyer; father-in-law John W. Meyer of Broken Bow; sons, Jared Kottmeyer of Broken Bow and Evan Kottmeyer and his wife, Jessica, and granddaughters, Kendra, Kera and Kenly all of Lincoln; brother, Roy Kottmeyer of rural Guide Rock; brother-in-law, George Sund Sr. of rural Guide Rock; sister, Nancy and brother-in-law Dick Hall of Wymore; and many other relatives and friends. Fredrick was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church near Superior. Fredrick attended one-room rural schools in Nuckolls County and graduated from Superior High School in 1953. Following high school graduation, he continued to work with his older brother Roy on the family farm as he had since his father's death when Fred was 12 years old. While Roy served in the U.S. Army, Fred shouldered the responsibility of maintaining the farm and supporting the family. Fred was blessed with an extended family to mentor him. To supplement the farm income, he worked for others in the community. When Roy returned from military service, Fred volunteered for the draft and was selected to serve in the Dental Detachment from 1957 to 1959. The military dentists recognized his abilities and personal qualities and encouraged him to pursue a dental profession. Fredrick returned from military service, took the army dentists' advice and enrolled at Fairbury Junior College with a pre-dentistry major. To finance his education, he was a volunteer firefighter and lived in the fire hall. He also worked his nonclass hours at Rhode Packing Co. Upon graduation from Fairbury, he was accepted by the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry in Lincoln. This was an accomplishment to fulfill the requirements for pre-dentistry in only two years. He went on to earn the doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1965. While at the university, he met JoAnn Meyer of rural Upland at University Lutheran Student Church. They were married at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church near Minden. Their sons Jared was born in 1969 and Evan was born in 1973. Following Fred's graduation in 1965, the Kottmeyers moved to Broken Bow to establish a dental practice. In addition to building his practice, he served his church and Broken Bow Jaycees, was a professional member of the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce and served on the Broken Bow Board of Education and Tappan Valley School board. He maintained active membership in several professional dental organizations. For many years, he volunteered as a dental practice rotation center for the NU College of Dentistry Preceptor Program. He enjoyed learning from and teaching the dental students he mentored through this program. Fredrick served the community as a dentist until his retirement in 2005. He enjoyed knowing each person of the community through his many years of professional work. He was blessed to have so many patients that he also called friends. Fredrick was a Nebraska football fan and missed only a handful of home football games from the time he was a student until his death. He enjoyed reading and watching his children grow up, achieve an education, compete in sports and participate in 4-H. Family vacations, gardening, bird watching, spending time on the family properties, camping, hunting, fishing with his family, visiting with distant friends on the phone and serving the Triune God brought joy to his life.
