JONES DEAD A telegram received by relatives in the county Monday morning announced the death of Dr. Harrison H. Jones which occurred at the home of his daughter. Mrs. M.E. Hansel, near Durham, N.C., on the previous night. No particulars were given except that death came suddenly. Dr. Jones was one of the oldest and most widely known physicians of the county, having practiced his profession at Do Hill for probably half a century, retiring from active practice only a few years ago. He was a son of the late A.J. Jones was born in the year 1842, and was the last surviving member, save one, of his family, A.H. Jones, a brother, still lives and is a resident of McDowell. Dr. Jones was a zealous churchman, member of the M.E. Church South, and for many years an active worker in every church enterprise. The Methodist Sunday school at Doe Hill, of which he was long the superintendent, was recognized as the banner school of Highland. During his long and useful life he was prominently identified with the secular affairs of the county, an influential and useful citizen. His war record, as given in the history of Highland, is as follows: (61 — 65) Company B., 31st, Second Lieut., wounded at Gaines’ Mill. He was thrice married, all his children being by the first union, the wife and mother before marriage being a Miss Eagle. His surviving children are: Mrs. M.E. Hansel of North Carolina, Miss Sidney Wilson of Ohio, Mrs. Harry and Mrs. Elmer Moore, of Pocahontas and Hal Jones of Greenwood, S.C. His body was brought to his old, home at Doe Hill for burial Wednesday morning. HIGHLAND RECORDER MAY 23, 1924 DR H.H. JONES: Another veteran has answered the last "roll call.” The ranks are fast being depleted, soon all will have crossed over, and only the memory of their countless courage, their loyalty and devotion to a cause they believed to be right and the good deeds that have filled their lives will remain with us. Dr. Henry Harrison Jones, the subject of this sketch, the eldest son of Andrew J. and Jane Jones was born near the head of Cowpasture River, Highland county, Sept. 27, 1842, and died May, 11, 1924 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.E, Hansel, Mebane, N.C. where he spent the winter. His health had been very good, all winter, with the exception of two or three slight attacks of indigestion. He was taken ill about 4 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Hansel having gone to fill an appointment, Mrs. Hansel summoned a physician, who gave him relief, and he rested until 9:30. His daughter hearing him make a strange noise, went to him and found him dying. Mr. and Mrs. Hansel, and Hal Jones, who lives at Greenwood, S.C., accompanied the body to Staunton, where they were joined by another daughter, Mrs. Sidney Wilson and Mrs. A.C. Jones and two boys from Covington, Va., arriving here Tuesday evening. By request the body rested over night, in his old home, now, occupied by Dr. J.F. Stover. Funeral services were held in the Doe Hill church by Rev. John Rosenberger, who was his pastor at Dunmore, W.Va., assisted by Rev. Morrison, and the body laid to rest beside loved ones in the adjacent cemetery. The flowers were beautiful and were carried by his nieces, Misses Annie Lee Jones, Martha Eagle, Mrs. L. Webb Shoulder, Miss. Theo Alphin. granddaughter, Mrs. James Campbell and; grand nieces, Katie Bell Jones and Mary Ruth Eagle. His grandsons Arch and Harrison Jones, Hal and Charlie Moore carried confederate flags and a sword. Pall bearers were his nephews, Andrew L. Jones, Alpheus Jones, Randolph Eagle, Andrew Jones Jr., L. Webb Shoulder and Robert Hiner, The latter not a nephew; but had made his home with the deceased for a number of years, and was greatly attached to him. Dr. Jones was converted in early life, and united with the M.E. church South. All who knew him can testify to his loyalty to his church in all of its departments, especially did he love the Sunday school, and did more to advance it interests than any one in this community, having been made superintendent of the Doe Hill S.S. soon after he took up his residence here, which was in 1867 or near that date, and held the office until five years ago with the exception of two or three years, that his brother, the late Jared A. Jones held the office. A record of about 50 years and from a small school which closed during the winter months, he made it an "ever green.” school and the banner school of the county. He loved his church and was always present at the services except when professional duties called him away. He was a familiar figure at the annual conferences, S.S. conventions or whatever church interests were represented. Loyalty to his pastors was one of his strong characteristics. He answered the call for volunteers in the war between the States enlisting in Company B 31st Virginia regiment, held the rank of 1st Lieut, was wounded at Gaines’ Mill, which rendered him unfit for service thereafter. He attended the University of Virginia., graduated from the Baltimore Medical school, and began the practice of medicine at Doe Hill in 1867, being actively engaged until 1919. He loved his profession next to his church. His sunny disposition made him a welcome visitor in the sick room, and it was a source of joy to him, to know that while he ministered to the temporal needs of his patients, he could also minister to the spiritual needs. He was thrice married. His first wife was Miss Jemima J. Eagle, and mother of his children. His second wife was Mrs. Mollie Whitmore, and his last wife, Mrs. Cornelia Hanger. He is survived by five children, Mrs Harry Moore, of Dunmore, W. Va., Mrs. Elmer Moore, Mrs Sidney Wilson of Minnehaha, W. Va., Mrs Ernest Hansel of Mebane, N..C. and Harry G. Jones of Greenwood, S.C., all of whom were present at the funeral. Dr. A.C Jones oldest son, died August 1923, son Samuel A. Jones died 25 years ago at age 22. The other two children dying in infancy. The large attendance at the funeral attested to the esteem in which he was held. Hymns use were, "The Unclouded Day,” his favorite, "Nearer My God To Thee,” "How Firm a Foundation" and a solo "Crossing the Bar” by John E. Slaven, was beautifully rendered. Just at the close of the service nature, as if in sympathy, mingled her tears with the tears of love ones. A long life well spent, a blessed eternity. Henry Harrison also listed as Harrison Henry. Staunton Spectator April 8, 1896 Death Notice of Mrs. Jones 1st husband Daniel F. Mohler The sad intelligence reached our village Sunday p.m., the 5th that Mr. Daniel F. Mohler of Lock Seven, W. Va., died at Millboro Springs Saturday night, the 4th, aged about 73 years. The remains will be brought to this place, and interred in the Parnassus grave-yard, where his mother and his first wife sleep. It will, be remembered that Mr. Mohler was united in marriage a little more than a year ago to Miss Mary E. Whitmore of this community. Deceased left a large and prosperous family of grown children, who were born and reared near Mt. Solon. Mr. Mohler's birth-place is in this community. He was a thorough business man, and rapidly accumulated wealth, and had become one of the money-kings of W. Va. Mr. Mohler united with the church during the last years of his life. Death of D.F. Mohler Daniel P. Mohler, one of the most prominent and wealthy citizens of Augusta county, died on Sunday morning last at the residence of Dr. G. M. Nichol, at Millboro, Bath county, Va. Mr. Mohler had been complaining, but no one thought him seriously sick until a short time ago, probably about ten days. He determined to go to Millboro and be treated, inasmuch as he had received much benefit there on a previous occasion. He had only been there about one week. Mr. Mohler was the senior member of the very successful firm of D. F. Mohler & Sons, lumbermen at Lock Seven, a few miles west of Charleston, W. Va., where he was at the time time he was taken ill. Mr. Mohler was twice married. He has several children, all of whom are grown. One son lives near Mt. Solon. Mr. Mohler's second wife was a Miss Whitmore of Parnassus. His remains were brought to Parnassus where they were buried on Monday at 4 o'clock p. m. He was about 67 years of age. When the funeral procession arrived at Parnassus a large number of sympathizing friends were congregated. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. James of Staunton.
