Carroll Daily Herald - Wednesday, April 12, 1939 - Henry L. Fobes was born near Lake City in the year of 1869 and passed away at his home in Auburn, April 4, 1939 in his 70th year. His entire life has been spent in the surrounding community having graduated with the first class in the Lake City High School and received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1897. Locating in Auburn he has served the people of this vicinity over forty-one years. Early in life he united with the Methodist Church of Lake City and later he became a member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church, remaining faithful to the end. Dr. Fobes was united in marriage to Agnes Spater of Auburn on November 15, 1899. He leaves, to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Agnes Fobes; two brothers, Edwin G., of Chiliwack, B.C. and Howard L of Ryley, Alberta, Canada; three sisters: Mrs Alice Cleverdon of Glendale, CA, Mrs Ida Cochran of Ankeny, Iowa, and Anna Fobes of Whittier, CA. The funeral services were held in the Auburn Presbyterian Church on Friday afternoon, April 7, 1939 with the Rev. Arthur Rumbaugh of Battle Creek in charge of the service. B.G. Wallace of Sac City, close friend of the doctor, sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Crossing the Bar." Mrs. Leland Hanks closed the service by singing "Abide With Me," with Mrs. C.C. Basler as accompanist. The pallbearers, nephews of the doctor, were Clifford Cochran of Des Moines; Frank Jacobs of Lake City; Dr. M.W. Osburn of Independence; Ernie Dahlquist of Ames; Dr. D.C. Osburn; and Everett Garnatz of Auburn. Contributed by Kreider - His nieces and nephews called him "Uncle Doctor" and he delivered most of them and some of their children also. Even though he and Agnes had no children of their own, they were surrounded by those of his brothers and sisters.
