Friday morning Dr. Wilson was called to DuBois to see Dr. J. R. McColm, the smallpox patient. When he arrived at DuBois he was informed that he was too late as the patient was dead, and he did not see him at all. A sad condition of affairs was revealed. Dr. McColm contracted the disease while attending David Cope, the victim who died several weeks ago; he was confined to his home, and his family consisting of wife and three children- were removed to a small house adjoining, an immune was employed to take care of him, but no physician was permitted to see him; Dr. Jackson carried his prescription to the "dead line", where he was met by the nurse who reported to him the condition of the patient; a few days before the death Byron Cole of Table Rock was employed to assist in caring for the sick man, and the impression had gone aboard that the attack was light and the patient was getting better, but on Friday morning Mr. Cole reported him in a dangerous condition and asked that a physician be called to see him; Dr. Wilson was sent for, but the patient died before he arrived, and Dr. McComb's life was offered up for a people who would not permit him to have medical attendance during his illness. Dr. Wilson, accompanied by Dr. Jackson, visited the wife of the deceased and found her under the delusive hope that her husband was better,and when the physicians broke to her the fact of his death, it is no wonder that utter despair filled her heart and mind and that she was prostrated. The case is sad beyond the power of words to portray and wherever the circumstances become known the spontaneous sympathy goes out to the stricken wife and fatherless little ones. Dr. Jackson, the local physician, was willing to visit Dr. McColm, but the local authorities would not permit him to do so. No other cases are reported in DuBois. ====================================================================== More reports about this sad event. OMAHA DAILY BEE, Feb. 1,1900. Stricken With Smallpox PAWNEE CITY, Neb. Jan. 31- (Special) -A report reached here from DuBois this morning to the effect that smallpox had broke out in that place. Dr. J. R. McColm the physician who attended the David Cope case in Richardson county and which was reported in The Bee of last Thursday, is the person stricken. He was making preparations to remove from DuBois to a point in Iowa and had his effects packed for the start when taken sick. The community as reported, is wild with alarm and fears an epidemic. The disease is of the worst form. The city council held a session and adopted quarantine measures against DuBois. One or two arrivals from that place were summarily requested to return to the infected village and the highways leading from there are being posted and guarded. A rush for vaccination has commenced. In consideration of the fact that state aid, is unobtainable the authorities of the infected and threatened localities are considering the adoption of measures to be enforced if necessary with shotguns. The more conservative element of the population, however think a quarantine placing the DuBois people on a purely "honor" regulation will have the desired effect. Dr. McColm's condition is said to be critical. ====================================================================== THE TABLE ROCK ARGUS, Table Rock, Nebr. Feb. 8, 1900. Dr. J. R. McColm, the DuBois physician who contacted smallpox while treating David Cope, who died from the disease, is getting well. No other cases have developed at DuBois and it is thought there will be no more cases, as every precaution was taken to prevent the spread of the disease. ======================================================================= THE TABLE ROCK ARGUS, Table Rock, Nebr. March 1, 1900. Page 4. Dr. C. L. Jackson drove up to Armour Thursday to disinfect a home which had been occupied by smallpox patients- DuBois Correspondent to Pawnee Republican. There is a pathetic consistency about the DuBois people. They permit one of their practicing physicians to go to an infected house in another town without protest, but when one of their own physicians is stricken with the disease they permit him to die without medical attendance and threaten to run Dr. Jackson out of town if he dares visit his brother physician. Verily such beautiful consistency would make angels weep in anguish and devils dance for joy.
