Biggerstaff, 86-year old physician who had spent the greater part of his life practicing in Wabash County, died at 8:59 o'clock Friday morning at the Wabash County Hosptial, succumbing to infirmities of age. Failing over a period of months, Dr. Biggerstaff had steadily grown weaker and death came quietly with the members of his family surrounding his death bed. One-time president and founder of the Wabash Historical Society, Dr. Biggerstaff knew Wabash County better than any living person. His own early practice was situated in Lagro and Bippus, and later through the historical society work added to his great knowledge of the district. James Thompson Biggerstaff, son of William and Martha Ann Thompson Biggerstaff, was born in Piqua County, O., April 5, 1853. He received his early education at Holbrock Hall, Lebanon, O., and in 1875 he graduated from Starling Medical College, which later became the state university. He located in Lagro in 1875 and during his career there he practiced in Blackford and Jay Counties. He retired from active practice two years ago. During the war years of 1916 and 1918 he served as County Health Commissioner. He was a member of Lagro Tuscan of Free and Accepted Masons and of the Mount Pleasant Church. He was an ardent Bible student and in May 1931 he was awarded a Bible by a national company because of his scholarship in this line. He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas, who was killed in the second battle of Bull Run; another brother, John Wesley, who died in British Hondoras; a sister, Mary Elizbeth Homes, Circleville, O., and a half brother, William Watson, Peru. In 1876 Dr. Biggerstaff was married to Miss Isabelle Bechtold, Lagro, daughter of Nelson Bechtold, and to this union were born eight children. These included Mrs. Robert A. Young, Fort Worth, Tex., Mrs. Marion C.V. Bell, San Gabriel, Calif., Miss Leona Biggerstaff, Lee and Ray, Poisen, Mont., Earl, Toledo, O., Clark of Booneville, Mo., and Mrs. Ruth Printy, Lagro. The death of Mrs. Biggerstaff occured in 1892. After three years, Dr. Biggerstaff and Miss Cora Ann Brookover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Brookover, were married and five children were born to this union including Andrew G., Atlantic Highlands, N.J., George W., Louisville, Ky, Mary, Wabash Lieut. John W., Patterson Field, Dayton, O., and Mrs. Edward Kemp Jones, Wabash. Surviving besides the widow and the 13 children are a sister, Mrs. William Murray, Circleville, O., and the following grandchildren: Mrs. Robert Dare, Fort Wayne, Robert Printy, Lagro, John Printy, Hutchinson, Kans., James, Joann and Betty Lee Biggerstaff, Chario, Mont., Mrs. Charles Calvert Rutherford, Fort Worth, Tex., James Herman Biggerstaff, Franklin, Mo., Edward Kemp Jones and Stephen Guffin Jones, Wabash. Surviving great-grandchildren are Shirley Ann Dare, Fort Wayne, Calvert Rutherford, Fort Worth, Tex., and John Everett Printy, Hutchinson, Kans.
