William Henry Green, son of Thomas and Emma (Bellcock) Green, was born on a farm near McGregor, Iowa, December 7, 1874. When he was about five years old the family moved to a farm near Lohrville, Iowa, where he passed his boyhood and received the education afforded by the schools of that town. He taught school for several years before beginning his professional studies in the medical college of Drake university, from which he graduated in 1902. He served his internship in the Iowa Methodist hospital in 1902-1903. On October 22, 1904, he married Miss Bertha Mahron and established a home and practice at Farnhamville, Iowa. During the thirteen years he lived there two of his three children were born, Margaret, now Mrs. Beery, and William. At this period of his life he was very active in the Methodist church to which he belonged, singing in the choir and teaching in the Sunday school of which he was for a time superintendent. While in Farnhamville he became an Odd Fellow and a member of the W. 0. W. The following years were spent in Otho, Iowa, where their youngest child, Frances was born. In 1926 he brought his family to Fontanelle and has lived here and practiced in this vicinity since that time, also maintaining an office in Bridgewater several years past. Since coming to Fontanelle, though he has not engaged so actively in church work and civic pursuits as in his earlier life, he is identified in the mind of the community with all that stands for righteousness and good citizenship. He served on the town council for a number of years. Devotion to his family, to his patients and to the ethics of his profession was the cornerstone of his character. He found pleasure in simple wholesome things. His garden was his avocation. He delighted in planting and cultivating, in grafting aid pruning, and seeing the fruition o his labor. The modesty and reticence, which were a part of his nature, hindered in a measure the making of promiscuous friendships, but these became attributes of his personality that endeared him to those so fortunate to know him intimately, and commanded general respect and confidence. When a youth of fifteen he was attacked by the disease, osteomyelitis which though latent for many years, ultimately caused his death, which occurred last Monday, February 10, 1936 at the Methodist hospital, Des Moines. Besides his wife and three children he leaves two grandchildren, Dale and Margaret Ann Berry, and is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Eliza Hoyle, of Churdan, Mrs. Susie Cutshall, of Van Meter, and Mrs. Ida Cutshall and Mrs. Maud Cutshall both of De Soto.
