Mr. Crowe is writing a memoir of his years growing up in Dos Palos, and he kindly shared the following excerpt of his work. ********************************* "While I knew who Earl and Melba Beere were, it was their son, John Earl Beere (1938-2002), who I best knew. The Beere's lived west of the hospital between the Burgess and Jacobsen homes. We lived one block north of the Hospital…so pretty close to the Beeres. All through the early 50s John Earl was one of my regular bicycle pals. He was a big fan of Roy Rogers and often wore a cowboy outfit and cap pistols while riding. If we both had such pistols we rode and chased each other all over town firing away. Once or twice John came into our house with me and he'd address my mother as "Richard's Mother" rather than Mrs. Crowe. As the early 50s grew into the latter 50s, I began to realize that John Earl was not mentally right. I gradually drifted away from him as I grew older and he didn't. Melba Beere taught 6th grade in the grammar school. She had a reputation for being severe and in the 5th grade I hoped I would not have her. Instead, I was placed in Mrs. Warnock's 6th grade class and her reputation for severity was even more so. I understand from my fellow classmates that Melba was a good and fair teacher. I do not have much more memory of the Beeres. I don't think they socialized much. I do remember Earl Beere working in a local liquor store in town as I'd deal with him when I went in for a soda. Once, Mom and Dad invited the Beere's to a small social gathering of fellow teachers (Mom taught 7th grade Reading) at our home (ca 1961). They didn't show up. Later Melba called Mom to say that she completely forgot about it as they rarely socialized. She said she woke up about 2 AM and realized she had forgotten. She felt awful to have missed the function. " Richard Crowe ********************************* The following story is courtesy of Joana Jacobsen, a neighbor of Earl, Melba, and John Beere. "Dad and Joe Burgess bought those three houses on Marguerite St. together as they were officers' houses from the Eagle Field Days of the war. The military wanted to sell them as one. Because we had lived in the old funeral home (across the street from the Methodist Church) for about 9 months at the end of the war, (we had lost our rental as the owner was a returning military man and we could not find anything else) we got the first house available which was the one on the corner. The Burgesses got the last one and the one in the middle was rented. The Beeres were the second tenants and eventually bought the house. Melba and Earl came to DP because Earl had been promoted to Manager of Justesson's (spelling?) Food Market on Center Street. Melba started teaching. Sometime when I was in elementary school, Earl was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He went to the Ahwahnee Sanitarium to recover. When he came home, he got a job at the liquor store. I know they didn't socialize too much. They were wonderful neighbors and would do anything to help. Melba was a Mormon and was active in the church in Los Banos. Earl was not a Mormon. I remember they would visit in the evening sometimes and Dad would make Earl a cocktail, and though she didn't drink, Melba was ok with the others having a drink. I wondered if that was why she forgot to come to your mom's invitation?? I don't remember when Earl died, but he died of a heart attack when he was working in the yard, and John Earl found him. I remember Johnny say, "I lost my buddy." I think Earl was in his early 60's. Melba lived in the house for many years after Earl died. She eventually moved to a rest home in Los Banos and lived to around 100. John Earl had moved to the Whitson home much earlier and died several years before his mother."
