The funeral will be held at his home tomorrow morning at nine thirty, and interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. The members of the Retail Merchants Association will close their places of business during the hour of the funeral. Mr. Hunt had the enviable distinction of having been longer in active business than any other Fairfield merchant. Since 1871, up until the last few months he has been actively engaged in his shoe store - a period of 45 years. Mr. Hunt was a good business man in the best sense of the term. He gave careful attention to the management of his affairs and he had his reward. He was esteemed both for his success and for the qualities that gave it to him honorably. He was enterprising and public spirited; loyal, and deeply interested in all that concerned Fairfield. Any improvement, public or private by any one, seemed to him as so much added to the common good and he took satisfaction in it accordingly. He was willing to take his part in any venture that promised to help Fairfield. He took great pride in his business and was not content until his store and building presented an unusually attractive appearance. While he never sought office he was public spirited and generous to all movements that appealed to him or that tended to build up or beautify Fairfield, or make it a bigger or better city. His circle of personal friends was unusually large, and he took great enjoyment in meeting old acquaintances and in keeping old friendships in repair. He looked forward to a period when his well earned competence should give hi large leisure for such enjoyment. He was a member of the board of directors of the Iowa State Savings Bank, Jefferson County, Telephone Co., and the Iowa Malleable Iron Works, and was president of the Hunt-Ireland Shoe Co. He was also interested in many of Fairfield's other manufacturing enterprises. He believed in good schools and education, and regretted that his own opportunity in early life had been so limited, although he must have improved them to the utmost. He gave his children the opportunities he lacked, and all have been students in college, and three of those living are college graduates. Mr. Hunt was born in County Tiperary, Ireland, on May 2, 1847, and was five years old when he was brought to the United States. He has one sister living, Mrs. Bridget Rogan (sic. Hogan ??), of Iowa City. His father, John Hunt, died of cholera in New Orleans shortly after the family reached this country, and his mother lived only about one year longer. He lived for a time in Iowa City, St. Louis and Mt. Pleasant, and came to Fairfield in 1871 and immediately established himself in the shoe business, opening a store in a room of the Wilson Block on the South side of the square. There he was joined in business by his brother-in-law, E. A. Howard, the partnership continuing until the organization of the Iowa State Savings Bank, when Mr. Howard became its cashier. Later Mr. Hunt moved his business to the present location on the north side of the square, and his sons and J. E. Ireland were later taken into the firm under the name of the Hunt-Ireland Shoe Co. He was married in 1876 to Elizabeth Lamson, a daughter of the late Ward Lamson of this city. Mrs. Hunt survives her husband, as do five of their children, Fred L., Day, Walter D., Edmund V. and Gail. HUNT HELD THIS MORNING The funeral of the late Ed Hunt was held this morning at half past nine at the family residence on South Main street. All of the business houses of the city were closed during the hour of nine for the funeral, which was attended by an unusually large number of those who wished to pay a last tribute to the memory of one universally loved and respected.
