DAY HUNT WELL KNOWN IN BUSINESS, DIES Passed away at University hospital at Iowa City last night R. Day Hunt, prominent Fairfield resident and business executive, passed away at the University hospital in Iowa City last night at 7:35 p.m. Mr. Hunt was taken to Iowa City, August 30, following a severe heart attack. His condition remained serious fro the first week but since then reports indicated he was slowly improving. His death was sudden and a shock to the family and entire community. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., at the First Christian church in Fairfield in charge of Rev. S. P. Williamson. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. R. Day Hunt was born July 10, 1880, in Fairfield the son of the late Edmund and Elizabeth Hunt, pioneer family of Jefferson county. He spent his entire life in this community, taking an active part in business and civic affairs. Mr. Hunt was widely known throughout Iowa and the United States through his association with the Dexter Company. He had served as Executive vice-president and general manager of that company since it was moved to this city in 1912. Mr. Hunt, with L. O. Gaines, also of Fairfield, purchased an interest in the Dexter Company in 1911 when it was located in Dexter, Ia. Mr. Hunt spent one year in Dexter before the factory was moved to Fairfield. Previous to that he was associated with the Hunt-Ireland Shoe Company. Under the guidance of Mr. Hunt, the Dexter Company has grown since it was moved to Fairfield, and it survived the depression years in the early 1930's. At the present time the plant is doing its part in the war effort by manufacturing war equipment. Mr. Hunt had several other business connections in Fairfield and other points. Besides being president of the Iowa State Bank & Trust Company here he was also president of the Appliance Manufacturing Company, of Alliance, O. Mr. Hunt was a prominent figure in the washing machine business. He served as president of the American Washer and Ironer Association for several years. Beside his wide connections in business circles, Mr. Hunt was also interested in agriculture and took a great interest in its promotion and problems. Mr. Hunt is survived by his wife, Nellie Ball Hunt; four sons, Thomas, Ward, and William, all of Fairfield, and Corp. Harvey Hunt, stationed at Lowry Field near Denver, Colo., and one daughter, Mary, at home. He is also survived by one sister, Miss Gayle Hunt (sic), and two brothers, Walter and Edmund, all of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. --------------------- The Fairfield (Ia. Daily Ledger Monday Sept. 21, 1942 MANY FIRMS PAY RESPECTS TO DAY HUNT Scores attend funeral; many send messages of sympathy Besides the many relatives from distant points who attended the R. Day Hunt funeral at 4:00 p.m. Friday, scores of business executives and representatives gathered to pay their last respects to a fellow business man whom they all knew so well. Having served as president of the American Washer and Ironer Manufacturing Association for several years, and also active in other branches of business, Mr. Hunt was widely known in the manufacturing and business circles. Scores of manufacturing concerns and business men who were unable to attend the last rites or send representatives, sent messages of sympathy. A portion of those business executives who attended the Hunt funeral are as follows: { a full listing of names and locations published is omitted due to the sheer number - well over 100 names were mentioned } .....The Floral display at the R. Day Hunt funeral Friday was believed by many to be the largest ever seen in Fairfield.
