McDonell, 1935-1959 ---------------------------------------- Obituary - The Perth Courier - Apr.20,1983 Edna May McDonell - The family and relatives and many friends of Edna McDonell were saddened to learn of her death on Wednesday, March 2, 1983 in her 87th year. Edna May Kirkham was born on September 14, 1896 on a farm near Clarendon, the daughter of Isaac and Christina Kirkham. She married Harry McDonell in 1918 and they raised a family of eight children on a farm in the Clarendon area. Edna was predeceased by her husband, Harry, in 1966, sons Carl in 1959 and Cecil and Herbert in 1980. She is survived by her sons Roy of Havelock, Ronald of Perth, and Kenneth of Oshawa, and two daughters Marie (Mrs. Harry Young) of Kingston and Helen (Mrs. Gordon Darby) of Perth. She leaves behind 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Edna is also survived by her brothers Thomas Kirkham of Perth, and Russell and Kenneth Kirkham of Kingston. One brother Earl, predeceased her in 1969. Her body rested at Blair and Son Funeral Home in Perth where the funeral service was conducted by the Salvation Army on March 5th. Interment was in Crawford's Cemetery. The pallbearers were six of Edna's grandsons, Edwin, Randy, Neil, Mark and Doug McDonell, and Gary Darby. While living on the farm near Clarendon, Edna found time and energy for her many crafts which included painting, needlework, crocheting, and quilting. She was an active member in her community where she was the organizer and leader of CGIT and later 4-H Clubs. For years she also won numerous prizes at local fairs for her quilts, crafts, and cooking. Edna was a member of the women's Institute, both in Clarendon and later when she moved to Perth in 1965 she became a member of the 2nd Line of Drummond W.I. where she received her 25 year membership pin. Edna also took a great interest in her family roots and helped organize the yearly Kirkham reunion gatherings. Tributes to her memory were many beautiful floral arrangements and donations to the Heart Fund. Due to her happy and loving nature Edna will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
