McDonell, 1935-1959 -------------------------------- The following biography is from a book called "The McDonell Saga " written in 1982 by Harry's sister, Barbara Jean (McDonell) Crawford. - " Harry, the oldest boy in the family, remained at home for a time, then he went to Powassan with Delbert Sergeant to work in a lumber camp. In 1910 he went out West to Alberta where he stayed for seven years. I was only 2 years old when he went so those years are lost to me. He was somewhere near Youngstown on a homestead. His family are rather vague about his life in that period, so Edna suggested I write to Tillie Layden for information. I did and she answered and said Harry went to Homestead on 160 acres of very dry land, 130 miles east of Jim Layden's. She heard Harry was at Joe Sargeant's and she rushed home to tell her parents and was promptly sent to Sargeants with a note asking Harry over for dinner. He went threshing with Jim Layden that summer and on following summers. Then Jim Layden sold his thresher and Harry came no more. Tillie said she sure missed him. I think they were rather fond of one another, but years after when I met Tillie at Edna's, I felt Harry did not miss a thing, when I had to listen to Tillie talk on endlessly and say nothing. I mentioned it to Herbert, I wondered how Edna stood it and he said " Oh, Mother doesn't hear anyway ", so that was something to be thankful for. I remember one day when I was at Agnes' and Byrnes and Emma brought Edna and Tillie to see her, (Addie & Edith were there too) and Tillie just broke into our conversation and talked on and on. Tillie said Harry's post office address then was Wistie, Alta., but that may be nonexistent now. Anyway Harry returned home in 1917. The taxes were not paid up on his homestead and it was eventually sold for back taxes. The family did mention that there was an offer of $4,000 for the Homestead once, but Addie did not think it was enough, so the offer was not taken. That $4,000 would have been a God send to Harry when he bought his farm at home (if there is any truth in all of this). Edna says the first time she met Harry, he had come to Clarendon with Herbert and they were at Edith Appleby's place. Then he asked her to go to Elphin to something and that started it and they were married in the fall of 1918, and Harry bought Mosie Chambers' place, and Mother thought he paid too much for it. Harry worked very hard and so did Edna. He was a good neighbour and raised a big family. Harry was a terror to swear. He could beat Dad, when he got started. Edna did not like it either. Finally he had to stop farming and they retired to Perth. He did not have too long to enjoy his retirement, when he took a heart attack suddenly and passed on. He was the first break in our family for years. I remember thinking this is the beginning now for us but it was nine years before we lost any other member of the family. " -------------------------------- Obituary - The Perth Courier - Nov.17,1966 Harry McDonell - This oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDonell of Zealand, Ont., passed away suddenly in the G.W.M. Hospital in Perth, on August 12, 1966, in his 77th year. From 1910 to 1917, Harry homesteaded near Youngstown, Alberta, then farmed near Clarendon, Ont., until his retirement in Perth in the autumn of 1965. On November 27, 1918, he and the former Edna Kirkham of Clarendon, were married. Of their children, (Marie) Mrs. Harry Young, lives in Kingston; Cecil in Sydenham; (Helen) Mrs. Gordon Darby, Herbert and Ronald live in Perth; Roy near Norwood; Kenneth in Oshawa, and the late Carl. Besides his widow he is survived by sisters, Mrs. Addie Rutherford of Mannville, Alta.; Agnes, Mrs. Wilfred Snedden of Almonte, Ont.; and Jean, Mrs. Jack Crawford of Toronto,Ont.; brothers John of Maberly, Ont.; Joe of Toronto, Ont.; and Burns of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. were all present at his funeral. A sister, Gwendoline (Mrs. John Buchanan) is deceased and a brother Herbert, was killed in action in 1918. Rev. J.A. Raycroft, Anglican Rector of Perth officiated at the funeral service in the Morrow Funeral Home in Perth and at Crawford's Cemetery on August 15th, 1966. The pallbearers were six nephews, Robert, Burns, Herrick and Lindsay McDonell, William and David Snedden. Sympathy to the bereaved family was expressed by a wealth of beautiful flowers and thoughtful acts.
