THE ODEBOLT CHRONICLE - Thursday, March 1st, 1928 - Henry Gosch was advised Thursday morning of the death of his former neighbor and friend, Edward A. Barkley, who died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Gilmer, at LeMars., Wednesday morning, after an extended period of illness. The services were held at the Gilmer home Saturday morning and the body was then brought to Odebolt. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the Rev. E.M. Bell, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Wall Lake, conducting the service. Burial was made by the side of his wife in the local cemetery. The pall bearers were: Charles H. Smith, W.J. Smith, H.J. Draper, A.D. Johnson, Malcolm McGeachy, and Henry Gosch, all former friends of the Barkley family. Mr. Barkley was born at Quebec, Canada, September 15, 1848, and at his death was in his eightieth year. He grew to manhood in Canada, but came to the U.S. when a young man, locating in Clinton county, Iowa. While living at that place he was married to Anna Marie Beckon, who died twelve years ago. In the early days of this county the family came here, and resided on the farm in Levey township, southeast of Odebolt for a good many years. Mr. Barkley engaged in farming all of his life, until a few years ago, when he retired and moved to a small place in the outskirts of Sac City. Recently he has been cared for in the home of his daughter, where he died. Mr. Barkley was the father of twelve children, seven of whom are left to mourn his death. They are: William, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Gilmer, LeMars; Mrs. Robert Meyers, Storm Lake; Mrs. Otto Hansen, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. Ed Johannson, Lake View; Edward Barkley, Sac City, and Mrs. G.0. Whetstone of Des Moines. He leaves also nine grandchildren. One of these is Mrs. Ed V. Johnson of Odebolt. Two sisters are living, Mrs Mary Smith of Carroll and Mrs Em Brumbau of Texas. All of the family were present for the funeral except Mrs. Johannsen, who is ill, and was unable to come.
