Sand, well-known Miller Twp. farmer, passed away in St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 1933, following an operation three weeks before for a ruptured appendix. Born in Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, August 8, 1884, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sand, Edward David Sand resided there until three years of age. Then he came to Woodbury Co. with his parents and this has been his home since. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of fourteen. On January 27, 1909, he was married to Miss Mary Brant. They resided five miles east of Anthon for the first ten years of their married life. Then they purchased what is known as the Suiter ranch, five miles southeast of town, and they have resided there the past fourteen years. Five children were born to their union. Two sons, August Edward and Winfield Scott, died when they were two years old. Two daughters, Josephine and Esther, and a son, Nicholas, all of whom are at home, survive. Other survivors include the heart-broken widow, Mary Sand; his mother, Mrs. Ernestina Sand; his 97-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Handke of Reseda, California; eight brothers, Henry of Pollock, Louisiana, and John, George, Carl, Ervin, Robert, Otto, and Albert, all of Anthon and vicinity; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Thomsen and Mrs. Ida Burow, also of this vicinity; other relatives and a host of friends. His father, John Sand, and two sisters, Emma and Anna, preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Anthon M.E. Church, the Rev. Watson Herrold officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery beside his two sons, under direction of Hudgel's Funeral Service.
