He also worked for the Fillmore... Read More	HUTCHENS, EDWARD DERREL DERREL--Edward Derrel Hutchens was born to Lewis Edward and Elsie F. McDermet Hutchens on April 29, 1909, at Martland. He passed away at the Fillmore county Hospital in Geneva on Jan. 12, 2004, at the age of 94 years, eight months and 13 days. He was one of five children in the family. Derrel graduated from Geneva High School in 1927. He farmed near Geneva his entire life. In addition to farming, Derrel was a repairman for Chelsea Telephone Company in the 1930’s and 1940’s. He also worked for the Fillmore County ASCS office as a commodity inspector and acreage reporter and in 1976 was recognized by the State ASCS committee for 19 years of service. He was an ACCO seed company dealer, which later became Cargill, and was recognized by Cargill for 30 years of service to the seed industry. He was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church for 83 years. He served on the Blaine School District No. 45 school board for several years; was a member of the Chelsea Township Board and was a charter member of the new Hidden Hills Country Club, even though he never played golf. Derrel was honored by Gov. Jim Exon with an admiralship in the Great Nebraska navy for his years of service to agriculture and Lela and Derrel were recognized by Gov. Mike Johanns on March 4, 2001 with an Admiralship for their 70 years of marriage. Since 2001, Derrel has been honored by the Geneva Alumni Association as the oldest male graduate of Geneva High School and was also featured on York radio and the Perennial news about his life experiences and what electricity meant to the early pioneer. Derrel started farming in 1927 as a senior in high school when his father passed away. He helped to raise two younger sisters and cared for his mother and took over the family farm. Derrel’s commitment to his family came first and foremost. He was the happiest when he was in the field doing what he did best, growing crops and raising livestock. He took pride in his straight rows and in being a good neighbor. His latest personal joy and greatest satisfaction were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a matter of necessity, he became a self-taught electrician, carpenter, plumber, welder and mechanic. His greatest accomplishments, however, were teaching the true lessons of life, that included work hard, be honest, trust a friend, return the trust, be faithful to your family, and appreciate your heritage, your community and your country. Derrel enjoyed history, a good joke and storytelling and his memory and wit served him well to the very end. He adapted to every situation that life sent his way and could fix anything and seldom complained. He trusted people and believed you could do business on a handshake and a word. He was pleased to experience recent trips to such places as Florida, San Antonio, the Grand Canyon and Nashville, only as long as it was a family affair. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed his jokes, funny sayings and the many retold stories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Edward and Elsie F. Hutchens; two brothers, an infant brother George Eldon; sister, Francis G. Ebbeka; granddaughter, Sherry A. Voge; niece, Charlotte Wilson; and wife of 70 year, Lela M. Hutchens. He is survived by his son, Leon and wife Delores; daughter, Linda Jones and husband, Lynn, and son Don and wife Donna; grandchildren Lori and husband, Kevin Hutchens; Carmen and husband, Kevin Roberts, Brian and wife, Kristin Hutchens; Kris Pollock and husband, Andy, Kate Hutchens, Jerad Hutchens; grandson-in-law, Tad Voge; 11 great-grandchildren, Jessica and Brett Hutchens, Ian Matney, Brandon and Kevin Voge, Breanne, Brennen and Brittan Elaine (Lainey) Hutchens, and Elizabeth (Libby), Sam and Katherine Lela Pollock; sister, Maxine Nichols; nieces Marilyn Lee, Diane Jacobson, Sue Lottman, Sharon Harms, Dixie Reed, and Shelly Kubany; nephews, Bob and Jerry Ebbeka, Brent Robinson and Dennis Hall. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 16 from the United Methodist Church in Geneva with Rev. Pat Kelly officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin V. Myers who sang “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Casket bearers were Brian, and Jerad Hutchens, Andy Pollock, Bob Nunns, Lynn Yates and Kurt Myers.
