In addition to teaching school, Lela... Read More	HUTCHENS, LELA MERLE—Lela Merle (Hall) Hutchens was born to Harry V. Hall and Laura (Myers) Hall on March 8, 1912, in Chelsea township. She lived in the rural Geneva area all her life and attended Geneva Public School all 12 years, which included normal training. Lela graduated in 1930, and taught at Dudley School, District 30. The day before her 19th birthday on March 7, 1931, she married Derrel Hutchens of Geneva. They celebrated their 70th anniversary together just over four months ago. Lela died July 28, 2001. In addition to teaching school, Lela worked at London’s hardware and Appliance in the 1950’s, the Geneva Girls Training School in 1960, and was a cook at Geneva Public Schools from 1960 to 1974. She raised and sold registered Golden Retrievers from 1976 to 1990. Lela was a 75-year member of the Geneva United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She belonged to the Chelsea Women’s club and was a past member of the Grange. This year, she and Derrel received an Admiralcy in the Nebraska Navy for 70 years of marriage. Lela enjoyed spending time with family, friends and animals. She organized eight annual family reunions, spent time visiting with friends at the Senior Center, and was surrounded by animals her entire life. Nearly every day she spent time journaling, cooking and maintaining the house and the yard. In addition to her love for the Geneva community, she enjoyed traveling with her family. Lela was a surrogate mother, grandmother and confidant to many in the Geneva community. Her positive attitude and kind words to everyone will leave a void in the community. She believed in the value of a neighbor and the honor of doing business on a handshake. She worked hard all her life, loved family and friends with all her heart, trusted in the Lord and loved her role as a farmer’s wife. Lela was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lyle Hall, and a sister, Verla Robinson. She is survived by husband, Derrel; son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Delores Hutchens; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Lynn Jones; and son and daughter-in-law, Don and Donna Hutchens; grandchildren and spouses, Lori and Kevin Hutchens, Carmen Hutchens, Brian and Kristin Hutchens, Sherry and Tad Voge, Kris and Andy Pollock and Kate Hutchens and Jerad Hutchens; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Brett Hutchens, Ian Matney, Brandon and Kevin Voge, Brennen, Breanne and Brittan (Lainey) Hutchens, Elizabeth (Libby) and Same Pollock. Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Geneva, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2001, with Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Organ music was provided by Susan Kleinschmidt with Delwin V. Myers singing “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Life’s Railway to Heaven.” The congregational hymn was “Precious Lord, Take My hand.” Casket bearers were Jerad and Brian Hutchens, Andy Pollock, Kent Myers, Lynn Yates and Bob Nunns.
