ST. MICHAEL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH HISTORICAL REVIEW:
In these early years other emigrants arrived in this new country, which at that time was nothing more than a dense and swampy woods. Many of the praninent pioneers, mostly of German and Irish origin were John Denair, Peter Lenhart, Adam, Peter and Nicholas Clemens, John Coressel... By 1861 we see such names as Peter Leithhauser, Joseph Kern, Edward Hoeffel...Known parish members more than a mile from St. Michael's site were A. Pessefal, F. Micus (Mekus), John Kern, M. Hoeffel, Peter Coressel, J. Hoschak, John Rauth, A. M. Coressel, John Jllbser, Joe Beck, George Miller, John Keller.
In 1840 Adams Township had a population of 188. Priests saying Mass in private homes were Reverends Andrev Herbstritt, C.PP.S. in 1854; Jacob Ringele, C.PP.S. in 1855; Engelbert Ruf, C.PP.S. in 1855; Francis Westerholt from 1855-58, and Aloysius H. Hoeffel [Edward H. Hoeffel's brother] from 1858-1868. In the year 1861, because of the more numerous and growing population, the Rev. Aloysius I. Hoeffel was appointed to St. John's Catholic Church in Defiance and directed also to look after the spiritual needs of the faithful living in the region of the North Ridge. It was during that year that the original church, a 30 ft. by 50 ft. frame structure, was erected on a one-acre plot of ground donated by Michael Lutz and dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel in remembrance of the patron saint of the donor of the land. An acre of land at that time was worth $40.00, but that amount was considered a real sacrifice. The organization of the parish continued until completed in 1862...
In 1893 ... although times were hard, the congregation made plans to build a new church, as the old church building was becoming too small. Six acres of land were acquired... in exchange for a burial lot in the new cemetery that was to be laid out on the new site. ... Bodies from the old cemetery three miles away were transferred to the new cemetery.
Sept. 29, 1903, the Church was dedicated. The generous contributions of labor and money on the part of the 67 families left the parish with only a small debt. Evidence of this generosity are the names of those donating the beautiful windows: Kate Lenhart (2), George R. Coressel, Frank Mekus, John Wagner Sr., John Rauth, John Coressel Sr., Albert Fronk, C. Bauer, Peter Leithauser Sr., Henry Coressel, young Men of St. Michael's, Albert J. and George H. Coressel, George Fronk and family, John P. and Jacob W. Coressel.
A beautiful new combination school and hall was erected on the original plot of ground which by this time had been increased to five acres... General building superintendent was Frank Coressel. .. the total cost of the building was $21,371.07. The building was blessed by Bishop Stritch in January of 1922. The old church building ... was sold at auction for $125.00. It was dismantled by Justin Coressel and Melvin Hall and taken to the Coressel farm. The next important improvements were a new convent for the sisters and a janitor's home built by Frank Coressel who charged 33 cents per hour for his labor...
Rev. Sylvester Eisel was next to serve at st. Michael's (1936)... He was especially remembered for his spiritual guidance. His death came suddenly on April 28, 1951. ... Pallbearers were Cletus Wagner, Ed Steinberger, Louis Mekus, Justin Caressel...
In 1954 George A. Fronk who owned land adjacent to the church property desired to add more families living close to the church. He commissioned his nephew Justin Ooressel to sell homesites of his property at a reasonable price to help accomplish his purpose. In 1955 Fronk's First Addition was dedicated. Also 165 ft. west of the old cemetery was given to the church for cemetery purposes. In the next few years 18 new homes were built, many of them by Alfred Kahle and Son, Builders.
In 1963 the Rev. Herman Fortman becarre pastor. During his pastorate ...[t]he changes in worship offered an opportunity for many donations: ... farm machinery by Justin Ooressel; one-half of 4 acres and buildings in Sec. 10, Richland Twp. by Anna Coressel.
Rev. Henry Szteiter became pastor in June 1970. In 1970 a parish council was formed. The first president was Ed Breckler, followed by ... Dennis Coressel... Mike Coressel...
On January 4, 1974 Rev. Russell Gillig was assigned as the pastor of st. Michael's Ridge. Three more Eucharistic Ministers were canmissioned: Dennis Coressel, Alfred Kahle and William Krueger...
Upon the suggestion of Robert Hath, a unique structure containing the cemetery map and directory designed by Sally Siler, was erected with funding by Justin Coressel in memory of his parents Frank and Alma Coressel.
Our organists date back to 1878 when Mrs. Anna (Fronk) Bauer began playing the organ when she was only 11 years old. She had the honor of being named the National Catholic Mother of the Year in 1950. Nine of her 14 children joined the religious life. Mrs. Bauer's sister, Mrs. Valeria (Fronk) Miller, succeeded her as church organist. Then Miss Rose Fronk, their cousin, played regularly until her retirement after 50 years. ...
Choir members while Anna Bauer was organist were Valeria and Charlotte Fronk, Anna and Bertha Lenhart, Agnes Steffel, Rose Fronk, Elizabeth Wagner, John, Ray and William Fronk. Members of the choir later on included Frank Lenhart, Clarence Moser, Richard Fronk, Frank Polasek, Alfred Kahle, Tom Clemens, Geraldine Fronk, Virginia Seibert, Terry Franks, Della Clemens, June Lenhart, Rita EIchinger, Rosemary, Valeria and Grace Wagner, and Cecelia, Janet and Catherine Coressel & Paul Wagner.
St. Michael's buildings and grounds are maintained in excellent condition by ... Mike Coressel...
The Altar and Rosary Society is one of the oldest organizations in the parish having begun about 1902 with Mrs. Albert Fronk as the first president. She was followed by Mrs. John Ramus, Mrs. Wesley Steffel, Mrs. Andy Mangas, Mrs. John Coressel, Mrs. Frank Coressel, Nettie Westrick, ... Martha Coressel...
St. Mary's League was started in 1903. The first president was Rose Fronk...followed by ... Cecelia Coressel, Janet Coressel...
