OBITUARY by member 46873059 Edward Marion Short, son of Henry Walker and Fanny Elizabeth (Smelt) Short, was born May 20, 1867 in Polo, Ill. He came to Nebraska with his parents when 5 years of age and settled on a homestead in Clay County, between Nelson and Edgar. Later the family moved to Nelson, where Edward was graduated from the Nelson high school with the class of 1890. Edward assisted his father in his law office and read law and was admitted to the bar as an attorney. The practice of law did not seem to appeal to Mr. Short as much as the teaching profession. In order to better prepare himself for this profession, he attended the University of Nebraska at different intervals and was graduated from this institution. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Delta Kappa. Mr. Short came to Franklin in 1898 and was superintendent of schools for six years. He was then elected to the office of County Superintendent of Schools, an office he held until 1910. On Aug. 21, 1901, Edward M. Short and Mary Fager were united in marriage. This union was soon broken by the hand of death when his companion was taken in a little more than three years, leaving two little daughters: Mildred, aged 17 months, and Maymie of six weeks. The latter soon followed her mother into a better land. Mr. Short and Miss Elizabeth Everson were united in marriage June 26, 1912, at Alma, Neb. Four children were born to this union. One, Eleanor Marie, died in infancy. Mr. Short continued his teaching and has been superintendent of schools in Beaver City, Madison, Oakland, Wymore and Arapahoe. He came to Franklin about four years ago and has since made this his home. He was a very faithful member of the First Methodist church of Franklin, having transferred his membership here. He was also a member of the A.F. & A.M. and Eastern Star lodges. After failing in health for some time, he passed away May 1, 1952. He is survived by his faithful wife of Franklin; one son, Edward Everson Short of Culbertson, Nebr., three daughters: Anna Louise and Mrs. Elizabeth Chehey of Boise, Ida.; Mrs. Mildred Nath of Los Angeles, three brothers, Carroll, Leslie and Ernest, one sister, Grace Snider, and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Franklin, with burial being made in Alma. The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, May 8, 1952
