Davis, who has been prominently identified with the civic affairs of this city for many years, passed away this morning at 2:10 at his home, 202 North Sixth street, after being in failing health for nearly a year. He was taken ill in September and was a patient at the Jefferson County hospital for several weeks and was later removed to his home after being somewhat improved. The funeral services are awaiting word from relatives at a distance (sic. Edwin was subsequently buried in Evergreen cemetery in his wife Hattie's maiden Moorman family plot). The body was removed to the Hoskins funeral home. Mr. Davis was a member of the city council at the time of his death, having held this place for several years. He served on the school board for several years. He was a faithful member of the Christian church and was on the mission board and was on the building committee at the time of the erection of the present new church and he gave much of his time to this cause (sic. note that the Christian church mentioned ceased operations in that building in 2011 and the building was sold and will be used for other purposes). He was affiliated with the K. of P. lodge and was always active in its affairs. Mr. Davis was 75 years old and he was born in West Newton in West Morland county (sic. Westmoreland county) Pa., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Davis. When a young man he came with his parents to Iowa and settled on a farm north of Fairfield. He was married to Miss Hattie Brown Dec. 14, 1902 and she is left to mourn his passing. He also leaves three daughters: Mrs. Myrtle Romine and Mrs. May Romine of Syracuse, N.Y., and Mrs. Bessie McClure (sic) of South Bend, Ind. A son Harry C. Davis died at Grand Island, Neb. May 3, 1929 (sic. see Harry Cook Davis) and another son Frank Davis died at Marietta, Ohio several years ago. He leaves two brothers and three sisters: Dr. S. K. Davis of Libertyville, N. D. (sic. not sure of the first initial of the state mentioned), H. D. Davis of Marshalltown, Mrs. J. T. Rodgers of this city, who is now spending the winter in Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. W. H. Bates and Mrs. Bruce Ratcliff of this city. ----------- Regarding the marriages of Hattie Belle Moorman for clarification: Hattie's first marriage was on Nov. 30, 1889 in Jefferson county, Iowa, to Henry S. Brown. They divorced on November 26, 1902 in Jefferson county, Iowa. Subsequently, Hattie remarried on December 14, 1902 to Edwin Harvey Davis. Henry was married in 1904 to Katherine "Kate" Mock Brown and they had two children. Both Henry and Hattie lost their respective spouses in 1930. On March 12, 1935 in Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa, Henry and Hattie remarried and their marriage continued until the death of Hattie in 1956. ----------- Marriage mention of Hattie and Edwin Davis: Fairfield Weekly Ledger Dec. 17, 1902 ".... SUNDAY evening, at the Lutheran parsonage in this city, Rev. W. J. Funkey performed a service which made E. H. Davis and Mrs. Hattie B. Brown husband and wife. Both are well known in this city and have many friends who will tender them congratulations." ------------ Re: Marriage to Lelah Maria Coffin Davis: The first name is generally found to be "Lelah", but as/of July 7, 2013 her FindAGrave memorial by another contributor lists her first name as "Lilah". The "Maria" for a middle name may or may not be correct; it was evidently listed that way in "The Coffin Family" published by Louis Coffin, but the source for "Maria" wasn't provided. The 1902 divorce documents refer to her as "Lelah May Davis", so perhaps someone inadvertently used "Maria" along the way. Edwin and Lelah were married on May 21, 1876 in Jefferson county, Iowa. They had five children during the course of their marriage, which was ended in divorce in 1902. Lelah is last found listed in a 1930 U.S. Federal Census (as/of April 2, 1930) in Syracuse, New York. She was evidently living in the household of her daughter Elizabeth R. Davis McClure (Mrs. Edward W. McClure); she is listed as "Mother-in-law". Perhaps in deference to the social mores of the time, she was listed as "Wd.", meaning widowed, even though while Edwin had indeed died the previous February, he had been remarried since 1902. A October 26, 1936 Syracuse Herald newspaper story mentioned "Lelah Cook Davis." Edwin and Lelah had five children - only two have a known F/A/G memorial as of July 4, 2013: > Franklin Davis, b. about 1876 > Harry Cook Davis; (a/k/a Harry Cook Samuel Davis). After his death applications were made for the obtaining of a veteran headstone, in view of his military service as a Pvt., 'C', 21st Kans Vols. Wife was Lelah Schlemmer, 1886-1964. She is listed in a F/A/G memorial as Leia Davis. It is possible that is a result of a cemetery transcription error, or what is on her headstone. Needs research. > Mary Mertle (sic. a/k/a Myrtle) Davis Romine, b. August 11, 1881. Married William B. Romine on July 17, 1900. Died on July 13, 1956 at Alameda, CA. Information on her burial location would be appreciated. > Anna May Davis Romine/Evans, b. Dec. 9, 1883. Married first to Rufus Winston Romine on June 23, 1902. After his death, Anna May remarried on Sept. 29, 1947 to Joseph Buren Evans in Los Angeles, CA. Further information about her death and burial location would be appreciated. > Elizabeth "Betty" Rosa (sic. a/k/a Rose) Davis McClure ( see Betty Davis McClure; referred to as "Bessie" in Edwin's obituary above, though), b. about 1891 or 1892 in Iowa. Listed in 1930 U.S. Census as being the wife of Edward W. McClure, living in Syracuse, N.Y., with her widowed mother Lelah living with them. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Y. McClure, aged 14. Information about this McClure family would be appreciated.
