Edwin Sayre Kennedy was born in Wabash, Indiana, February 2, 1846, and died in the home of hs daughter, Mrs. G.F. Greenwood at Chicago, on February 26, 1923, at the ripe age of 77 years and 24 days. He lived when a young man at Muncie, Indiana, for a short time, at which place he was married to Miss Mary Emma James on February 27th, 1873. In 1881 the young family moved to Nebraska, locating in Nelson, where they cast their lot with the pioneers enduring the trials with courage and fortitude energetic and honestly building up the town and community in the things that are best and noblest; leaving behind for this generation public schools, Sunday schools and churches. He was engaged for some time as a successful dry goods merchant in this city. Two children were born to this union, Helen J. and Edith Sayre, who are left behind to mourn a kind and loving father. When a mere lad in his teens Edwin heard the call of his country and enlisted in the Army of the Republic October 10, 1864, in Company B 47th Regiment, Indiana, first as a drummer boy. After enduring the hardships bravely and going through the experiences of a war veteran, he was honorably discharged at the end of his term, and being anxious to serve his country he was not satisfied until he re-enlisted under the colors of Uncle Sam, serving well and was finally discharged December 13, 1864. Fourteen years ago he was stricken with paralysis and has been an invalid ever since. For six years his wife so tenderly took care of him giving herself to his wlfare, sparing no time nor energy until she also was stricken with the same afflication from which she died and left him behind for eight more years, when he was taken away within an hour from the 50th marriage anniversary. For the first three years he was cared for tenderly by his daughter, Mrs. Spurck Henry at her home; then at the home of his daughter at Chicago from which place he was called to his Ternal rest. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. at Nelson; a member of the Masonic Order and of the Grand Army of the Republic. As a member of society he always stood for the noblest and the best, and willing to contribute his share for the advancement of mankind. His kindly manner and his generous ways made him many friends which he kept. During his long siege as an invalid he wondered often why he was spared while others were taken away. Perhaps it was that he might radiate the sunshine and bless the world with his cheer. Patriotic to the core his very presence was an inspiration to the rising gerneration, to look upon one who given his best to the honor of the flag which he held sacred and the country which he loved. His unselfish disposition lead him to be anxious always to lend a helping hand to the needy and the distressed of his fellows. He is truly mourned and missed by his large circle of ffriends in this city and community. He is missed in the home which he left. His two daughters were not ready to give Father up. "To live in hearts left behind is not to die." Life's race well run; life's work well done; life's crown well won, and now comes rest. There remain to mourn him besides his two daughters, Mrs. Greenwood and Mrs. Henry, his sister, Mrs. Emma Williamson, Abington, Ills; four half brothers, M.W. Carter, Nelson, Nebr.; D.S. Carter, Fresno, Calif.; S.M. Carter, Moorecroft, Wyo.; B.S. Carter, Kerman, Calif.; and a host of friends and former associates here in Nelson.
