Burial was in Lone Tree cemetery with the Sliefert Funeral home of Sioux Rapids in charge of arrangements. Eilet Martin Torkelson, was born January 8, 1895 to L.A. (Tony) and Stella Jacobson Torkelson on a farm in Lee township near Sioux Rapids, Iowa. As an infant he was brought to the Lord in baptism, and on May 1, 1910 he renewed those vows in the Rite of Confirmation all in First Lutheran church. Later the family moved to Sioux Rapids and as a lad he attended the Sioux Rapids high school then a year at the Shattuck Military Academy at Faribault, Minn. This was followed by three years in Buena Vista college in Storm Lake. When the United States entered World War I, he was assigned to training in the Signal Corps Reserves in Camp Logan, near Houston, Texas and later in the Coast Guard Defense Observation in Fort Monroe, Va. Upon receiving his military discharge in 1919, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., for two years. During the next 25 years he remained in the eastern United States, living mostly in Elizabeth, New Jersey having been employed by General Motors Chemical Company and the Government Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. In 1949 he returned to live in Sioux Rapids. As long as his health was good, he was active in First Lutheran, the American Legion Leighton-Rowe Post #394, the Buena Vista Historical Society, the Iowa State Historical Society and a member of the Lone Tree cemetery board for many years. In 1958 he was stricken with a severe heart attack which left the mark of poor health upon him. On October 22, 1971, he was taken to the Cooper Nursing Home in Sioux Rapids and it was here on the morning of Friday, Nov. 5, 1971 the Lord called him to his eternal home at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 27 days. He is survived by three brothers: Lawrence of Phoenix, Arizona, Howard of Tuscon, Ariz., Bendix of Long Beach, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Olive Anderson of Sioux Rapids and Mrs. Joyce Scott of Clinton, Iowa, an aunt, Miss Madeline Jacobson of Sioux Rapids, and a host of other relatives and friends who will greatly mourn his passing.
