Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. Lyle Shaw officiating. Burial will be in Lone Tree cemetery with the Henry Funeral home in charge Her father, Henry Jacobson, in partnership with two other men, started the first general store in this area. It was the first store between Fort Dodge and Sioux City and settlers came to trade at this store as far as 40 miles away. It was in the second story quarters of this building, located where the Locker plant now stands, that Mrs. Torkelson was born. Stella Torkelson, the oldest child of Henry and Mathea Jacobson, was born June 23, 1870, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. As there were no resident pastors in the pioneer village, she was baptized by the Rev Mr. Sauer, who occasionally came across the prairie from Fort Dodge to conduct services. She attended the local public schools at first in the two-room building located on the site of the present Methodist church, and later in the new four-room schoolhouse erected on the hill. In the years of 1888 and 1889 she was a teacher for three terms in the Brown school then located just west of where the Little Sioux Valley church was located in Barnes township, and for one term in the Bennett school in Lee township, on the corner where the Whitehead farm now is located. On May 9, 1889, she was married to L.A. Torkelson and went to live in the home he had already established on his farm southeast of Sioux Rapids. Seven children were born to them there. By 1909 Mr. Torkelson's health was failing and they moved to Sioux Rapids where he died late in 1910. She had been confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. G. Gulbranson of the Little Sioux Valley church. Upon her marriage she became a member of the Sioux Rapids congregation. She spent all of her life in Sioux Rapids except when she spent three years with two sons in California, and several winters in the home of her daughter in Clinton, Iowa. Her son, Eilet, has made his home with her since 1949. Although feeble, her general health was good until 1953 when she began to fail, and she became bedfast in August of 1955. She died September 18, 1956 at the age of eighty-six years, two months and twenty-five days. She is survived by four sons and two daughters: Lawrence of Danville, Ind.; Howard of Houston, Tex.; Bendix of Long Beach, Cal.; Mrs. Joyce Allen of Clinton, Ia.; Mrs. Oscar O. Anderson and Eilet of Sioux Rapids. A third daughter, Sylvia, died in 1909 when two years old. There are five grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Two sisters, Emma and Madeline Jacobson, also survive her.
