She was born to John and Susie (Friesen) Bartel on June 23, 1920 in Hillsboro. She was the oldest of five siblings. On June 7, 1945 Elda married Herbert Bartel, who passed on March 15, 1986. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, son Gordon, parents, John and Susie (Friesen) Bartel, sisters Rosa (Randy) Thimm, Wanda (AI) Swanson, and brother Johnnie Bartel. Before Elda was finished with high school she became a nanny for Dr. Ratzlaff's children. When Doc moved to Goessel, Elda moved with them. This is where she met Herb Bartel. After she married Herb they lived upstairs in Herb's parent's house for about a year and a half before they bought the farm a mile west of the home place. Elda was a homemaker using her creative skills for sewing, gardening, baking, cooking and most important of all raising her family. After the death of Gordon she shared her mothering skills by providing foster care to infants. In 1969 Mom began working as a CNA and later as a CMA. She worked at Bethesda for about 20 years. This work was important to her, giving her a way to share her healing touch with others. She was a dedicated worker. Sometimes when the weather was bad, she would spend the night at Bethesda so she would not miss work because the water was too high to cross, or the snow was too deep. After Herb's death she stayed out on the farm for many years, enjoying the freedom of country life. In 2001, she made the decision to move to a Bethesda duplex. In 2009, when mom needed extra care, it was not a hard decision for her to move into skilled nursing. It had always been like a second home to her. She would tell us about new residents who moved into the Home. She welcomed them and talked with them about how much she liked living at the Home. We would tease her about being part of Bethesda's welcome wagon. Mom loved flowers of all sorts. She loved the wild daisy fields she saw when she and Dad visited Nancy and her family in southern Missouri. After that Mom persistently collected dried daisy blooms when she visited. She scattered these seeds all over the farm. She looked forward to every spring when the daisies would come up and bloom. Mom enjoyed the challenge and the work of preserving food. She loved gathering up as many apricots as were to be found, canning the fruit as well as making jars of apricot jam. Another favorite was to gather sand plums and turn them into wonderful jam. The annoyance of the many chigger bites we would get as we gathered up the fruit was forgotten about as we enjoyed jar after jar of the wonderful jams and fruit. Mom's philosophy was to preserve all you could as you never knew when the harvest would be so bountiful again. Mom enjoyed creating denim quilts from recycled jeans for each of the grandchildren as they graduated from high school. When she would see a quilt pattern that she liked, she would sew a sample block so she would remember the pattern when she would have more time. Unfortunately when she had "more time" she was losing her eye sight and was no longer able to enjoy sewing. Allison, her granddaughter, took her collection of sample squares and put them together. This is the quilt that is on display. Mom enjoyed baking, especially bread, rolls, and cookies. Homemade whole wheat bread was part of every meal that she served. For years she enjoyed the routine of grinding her own whole wheat flour. She had a number of favorite cookie recipes. She remembered the favorite recipes of family members and various friends. It was not uncommon when we came for visits, that she had just made batches of our favorite cookies, as well as freshly baked bread. Mom lived her faith, more than she specifically talked about it. This was so clear in her unconditional love of family and friends. Growing up we would know when we disappointed her with some of our behaviors, but we never doubted her love for us, or her willingness to forgive us and to get a fresh start. Her faith helped her through a number of rough times. One of these times was Gordon's diagnosis of cancer at the age of 15, and his death one year later. These were tough times for her, but as with tough times in the past, she was able to work her way through it. Later she made sure that she offered comfort to other mothers whose children had fatal illnesses or accidents. She understood the importance of these mothers knowing that another mother had suffered this kind of unbearable tragedy, survived and went on to live a good and productive life. Elda was baptized in the First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, KS. She became a member of Alexanderwohl Church in 1945 where she remained an active member. She was very active in the Happy Home Workers sewing circle, she taught Sunday school and helped prepare and serve many meals. She is survived by her children, Nancy (Robert) Ferree of Elk Creek MO, Harlan (Grace) Bartel of North Newton, KS, Patricia (Herbert) Penner of West Chester, OH and Donald (Gayle) Bartel of Potwin, KS, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and her sister Helen Bargen of North Newton, KS. Many nieces, nephews, other extended family, as well as a host of friends will also miss her. The family would like to thank all her friends and family for their support, well wishes, and prayers you extended to Mom and to us. Thank you to the Alexanderwohl family, your support has been much appreciated. The family wishes to thank all of the Bethesda staff for the care and support they provided Mom throughout her life with them. She always felt safe and secure with them. We also are thankful for the friendship extended to mom by other residents in the home by reading to her, by talking with her about everything from families, the happenings in the fish tank, and to how the wheat was growing. Despite her continuously diminishing eyesight, she enjoyed the Home's flower garden, and the bird feeder in front of her window. Thanks to all who made these things part of Mom's and other residents' lives.
