Read More	Glasco Sun, July 5, 1945, page 3: Eli Jerman Smith Passes Away At Jamestown Eli Jerman Smith was born January 24, 1870, in Peoria, Stark County, Illinois, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alcid Cyrier, with whom he had lived for many years, at Jamestown, Kansas, on June 30, 1945, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 6 days. He, with his parents, came by wagon train to Kansas in 1875, settling near Scottsville. Left an orphan at the age of eleven years, he went to live at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Davidson near Glasco, Kansas. He made his home there until the age of 26, caring for the farm and home as though he were their son. On April 7, 1896, he was united in marriage to Susie Elizabeth Lockard of Simpson, Kansas, and they began their home life on the farm two miles west of Glasco, which he owned at the time of his death. Mrs. Smith preceded him in death on February 6, 1929. To this union was born one child, a daughter, Leona. He leaves to survive and mourn his passing, his daughter, Mrs. Alcid H. Cyrier, a loving grandson, Cpl. Richard Smith Brooks and wife Alve, his son-in-law, Alcid H. Cyrier, along with his son and daughter, Lt. Bernard A. Cyrier and Mrs. Arthur Rudd, a nephew, James Lockard, whom he reared from childhood, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Smith did not enjoy the best of health for many years, but during the past few years he seemed to improve in health so that he could get around without great difficulty. His sudden death occasioned by a stroke was a surprise to all. He took an interest in plants and flowers, taking great pride in keeping his daughter's yard and garden in perfect order. He loved all life in any form. His love and affection for children attained for him the loving name of "Grandpa." He helped to care for his grandson, Cpl. Richard Smith Brooks, from the time of his birth, giving him the love of a father as well as a grandfather. Cpl. Brooks has been in the European theatre of war for the past fifteen months. Mr. Smith looked forward to the day when this terrible crisis would be over so that he could be united again with his grandson. He watched daily for any mail that might come bringing a message from him. His thoughts were always for the safety of all our loved ones in the service. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend. Nothing pleased him more than to meet with his friends of the older days. He made new friends everywhere he went and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, having been a member for more than 42 years. Funeral services were held at the Stine Mortuary in Glasco at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3. The Rev. R.H. Hardesty, pastor of the Jamestown Methodist church was in charge. Singers were Mrs. Fred Harper, Mr. W.N. Pilcher, and Miss Mary Harper. Songs were "Rock of Ages" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul." Pallbearers were Bryan Davidson, Paul Davidson, Don Davidson, Wm. Keith Dopp, Frank Krizek, and Roy Cooper. Interment was in Glasco cemetery.
