Description	:	Eli Leist Valentine was born March 25, 1847, in Clear Creek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, the son of George and Mary Ann Leist Valentine. He married in Fairfield County, Ohio, on October 12, 1869, Lucinda S. Thomas, daughter of Isaac and Jane Coldren Thomas. They were the parents of 12 children: Clarence Edgar, Otis Harley, Carrie May, Sumner Clay, Melva Etta, Minnie Lee, Myrtle D., Kirby Ansel, Florence Edith, Nellie Mabel, Richard and Mary Marie Valentine. He married in Fairfield County, Ohio, on October 12, 1869, Lucinda S. Thomas, daughter of Isaac and Jane Coldren Thomas. Eli died November 24, 1926, in Clear Creek Township and was buried the 26th in Maple Hill Cemetery in Stoutsville. From Biographical Sketches in "History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio," complied by A. A. Graham (1883), p. 379: VALENTINE, ELI, farmer; post office, Tarlton; born March 25, 1847. Married October 13, 1868, to Lucinda Thomas. Is the father of seven children, six of whom are living: Clarence E, born August 19, 1870; Harley O., born March 13, 1872; Carrie May, born January 4, 1874; Sumner Clay, born April 3, 1875 ; Ettie, born August 18, 1878 died December 8, 1878; Minnie Lee, born January 28, 1879; Mertie, born December 14, 1880. The subject of this sketch resides one-half mile south of Oakland, and is one of the energetic farmers of Clear Creek Township. From the Lancaster Daily Eagle of Thursday Evening, August 26, 1926: "FARMER ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. Condition Is Improved Today. Suffers From Loss Of Blood. Eli Valentine, aged 79, and a well-known resident of Oakland, was found by his wife yesterday about 11 o'clock, on the floor of his barn, wrapped in a horse blanket, with his throat slashed in three places. It is thought by members of family that the aged man's attempt to commit suicide followed a lengthy illness of stomach and heart troubles. All night Tuesday night, it is said, he walked the floor and could not lie down or sleep. Early the following morning, he left the house, which is not unusual to be about his day's work and wasabsent from the rest of the family until found by his wife at noon. In the attempt to end his life, Mr. Valentine used his pocket knife, inflicting two wounds in the neck between an artery and the wind pipe and a third wound on the other side of the neck, missing the jugular vein but a short distance on each of the three attempts. Today, the condition of the aged man is greatly improved, and weakness resulting from the excessive loss of blood is quite evident. Attending physicians assert that he has a good chance for life if pneumonia does not set in. Mr. H. O. Valentine of 741 East Sixth Avenue, is a son of the aged man." The death of Eli Valentine, aged 79, occurred this morning at 9 o'clock at his home one-half mile south of Oakland, demise being due to heart trouble. Besides the wife, the deceased is survived by eight children, as follows: Mrs. M. P. Hedges, Lancaster, Mrs. Minnie Courtright, Stoutsville, Mrs. Edith Baker, Stoutsville, Mrs. Mertie Cruit of the home; four sons, Clarence, Stoutsville, Otis, Summer(sic) and Kirby, the latter three of Lancaster. Also, two brothers, Albert of Tarlton and Elias of Leistville. Funeral will beheld 2:30 p.m. Friday from the home, with burial at Stoutsville, by Deffenbaugh, Mortician."
