Kellogg Meets With Accident Which Causes His Death Last Friday about noon, Elijah Kellogg was accidentally shot with a shot gun, the charge tearing away the muscles both above and below the elbow of his left arm. Dr. Tinsman was called and an attempt was made to save the arm but it was seen that was not possible and Dr. Legge of the McCloud Hospital was called in consultation and Monday evening the arm was taken off at the shoulder. Although Mr. Kellogg stood the operation bravely and well, it proved in vain, and Tuesday evening he passed away. When the accident occurred Mr. Kellogg was on his way to take a lunch out to the crew of his harvester. He was riding in a surrey, and had taken his shot gun with him on the chance of getting a sage hen or some game. In some way the gun went to fall out of the rig and he grabbed for it. It is supposed that it struck on a wheel and was discharged. The direction of the wound showed that the arm was bent, as the muscle was torn away both above and below the elbow. It was fearfully lacerated with the charge. Mr. Kellogg was a veteran of the civil war and during his periods of delirium his mind went back to the days of the war. Mr. Kellogg was a most exemplary citizen and though a man of 70 years of age was still active and energetic in pursuing his work and his familiar face will be sadly missed from among us, as will also his cheerful and kindly words of greeting. He was a native of Canada, but came to this country when two years of age. Most of his life was spent in this State and much of it on his farm in this valley. He was aged 70 years, 7 months and 14 days. He leaves a sorrowing wife to mourn his sudden death, and to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.
