Per edit request on January 28, 2017, am changing the maiden name to "Ray", and adding nickname "Lizzie", but with some caution. There is a John A Rea, 1823-1910, who does match some Ancestry tree information for being the father of Elizabeth, but not totally confirmed. His headstone does use the "Rea" spelling, so that could again factor into which version should be used for the family surname. This is one of those family situations where the name can be spelled phonetically several ways, even within legal vital records and obituaries, so some leeway has to be given to either version used on this memorial. Am trying to reconcile the differences the best way possible, but ... well, not always possible to make everyone happy. rkt/June 29, 2017 ---------- Wife of William B. Longwell. LONGWELL PASSED AWAY Funeral Tomorrow Afternoon at 2:30 from S. A. Burnett Home Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Longwell, wife of William B. Longwell, passed away last evening at about 5:30 o'clock at her home, 601 West Jackson street. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the home of her daughter Mrs. S. A. Burnett, 705 South Fifth street, with Dr. U. S. Smith officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Longwell is survived by her husband and two children Samuel J. Longwell of Huston (sic. Houston), Texas and Mrs. Barnett of this city, also 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A grandson Robert L. LONGWELL RITES AT 2:00 Yesterday Afternoon; Many Relatives Were Here from a Distance The last rites for Mrs. William B. Longwell, who died Friday evening, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. A. Burnett, 705 South Fifth street. Dr. U. S. Smith officiated in the presence of many relatives and friends. The songs, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "Abide With Me" and "No Disappointment in Heaven" were sung by Mrs. William Zierlein and Mrs. Elga L. Spry with Mrs. Noble Sammons at the piano. The pallbearers were: Ely Shafer, Sam Shafer, Henry Shafer, Ray Stoner, Frank Hill and M. E. Hill. Those from away here for the funeral were: Miss Ethel Householder of Lincoln, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leffler of Washington, Mrs. Cora Webber and son Kenneth Longwell of New Boston, Ill., and Mrs. T. LONGWELL Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Ray Longwell was born in Henderson county, Illinois April 30, 1862 and departed this life from her home at 604 West Jackson street, Fairfield, Iowa, on January 25, 1929 at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 25 days. She was united in marriage to William B. Longwell in 1885. To this union were born four sons and one daughter, three sons having preceded her to the Great Beyond. She was converted at the age of twelve years and joined the United Presbyterian church of which church she remained a faithful member until coming to Fairfield in 1913 when she took up her affiliation with the Methodist Episcopal church. She was stricken in the middle of December with flu which was followed by pneumonia and other complications and after six weeks of great suffering and brave strugle (sic) for life, she realized that she could fight the battle no longer, and told her loved ones she was soon going to heaven. She leaves to morn (sic) the loss of a faithful wife and mother, her husband W. B. Longwell; one daughter, Mrs. S. A. Burnette (sic) of Fairfield; one son S. J. Longwell of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She belonged to a large family of brothers and sisters only one of whom survives her, J. H. Ray of Yates City, Illionois (sic), who is confined to his bed with the flu and was unable to attend the funeral. She laso (sic) leaves to mourn her departure a host of neighbors and friends to whom she has long been known as "grandmother."
